Storm Brewing in Melbourne

All you storm chasers. Storm a brewing in Melbourne. Given the fact it was boiling hot, I'd say there is a good chance it brings a lightshow.

I just drove home from the city (damn work!) and the clouds were definitely looking ominous. Had a bit of thunder but nothing too serious.

I was walking back to my car in the city when the rain hit. Boy was I glad I have an all weather camera bag :) Its sunny again now but I see from the Bureau's site that another front is approaching.

Cheers,

I've spent most of the day attatched to the PC waiting and waiting!

I did manage to venture out with the D70 in tow to grab a few happy snaps! No lightning, just ominous looking clouds. Overall, I only heard 1 rumble of thunder and saw 3 flashes. (2 distant in the car). At least it has cooled down a lot!

Looking South East from Chadstone around 2 ish. (storm chaser vehicle in foreground!)

Looking North East from same location. Not much PP work done at all on these, just a little brightning and sharpening. Snaps really!

Those are great shots!
I was at Point Cook taking photos of an aerial display as the front passed over. It was like a bomb as the wind and rain hit us.
The pilot doing the display thought he would have time to complete the display before the front came across... he was wrong. He did his best to maintain a straight flight path but the wind was simply too strong. During the landing he had the plane in a hover and it came in like a helicopter. The poor guy in the little Tigermoth that took off 2 minutes earlier didn't even make it back to the airfield. Turns out he had to try and outrun the storm making an emergency landing at Moorabin to wait it out.
The wind sweeping across the airfield was so strong that it created an enormous dust funnel. I didn't get a shot of this since I was busy trying to dodge the bucket size raindrops!
Although we knew it was coming the strength of the storm had taken everyone by surprise :o Here's a couple of shots... pre soaking.

Great shots everyone! I was in Clayton when the storm hit. Sure enough when I managed to claw my way back to the car, the wind died down. Started driving then the dust storms came through (dirtied the car) and the rain came (washed the car)... :?

Hope no one was caught out too badly in the storms.
