Error message

Postby gstark on Tue Apr 19, 2005 8:17 am

Some of you may see an error message when making a post.

We're trying to track down an issue with the email system on the new host, and that error message is a part of our tracking of this; you may ignore the message in most circumstances, as it appears when you've finished making a post to the forums, but the system is trying to send out the email notifications that have been requested from that posting.

I'm disabling the direct sending of emails from the system (for the moment) as this part of the system is failing, and I can't (at the moment) do much more about it. Sorry.

Please bear with us as we work through these teething problems.

I got the same error messages, and whenever I do refresh or view the page/ posts, it took enough time for me to go make myself a cuppa.

That's an interesting one; it seems to be associated with the way the thumbname and POW photographer are written to the include file in PHP. If I enclose them in single quotes, we seem to get this error, but if they're enclosed within double quotes, it seems fine.

or at least it does here. Please let me know if you continue to see this error.

John,

Have you seen this header issue (not the email one) since my prior post, and if so, about how long after it?

I've come to the conclusion that it seems to be something in the way that the php source is being parsed; there's an include file that provides a couple of bits of information about the POW. If that file contains some comments befoire any of the function declarations, all seems to be fine, but if I write the file with no comments, we seem to get these header errors.

It's no big deal for me to change the way the file gets written, but I'm simply trying toascertain what's working, and what's not.

Regarding the speed issues ... are you using a cable connection?

I know Chris is having those issues, as is Birddy (I think) and both use cable. My suspicion is that it's not a cable issue per se, but more of a proxy server one, as the system I use at the office also runs through a proxy, and it runs like a one-legged dog, whereas at home we run through two different conenctions, and it doesn't matter which of those we use, it just sparkles.

So ... how are you and Birddy connecting? If cable, Optarse or Helstra?

Chris ??

Hi Gary, wel all seems to be ok at the moment it is not happining all the time just now and then it's almost like when u have a peak time and off sometimes its good and others a bit slow when u hit the D70 index.
I am on westnet adsl but this has only happend in change we have made was all fine before hand, but it is no big drama and could be the problems as you said and well just thought i would let you know there is a delay some times in this process.
Cheers

I got one 10 minutes ago about too many users (we had eight) just after I tried to post a long post on POW. Suffice to say the later post was much shorter

Ok ...

Here's what I'm trying to track down.

There are three issues that I've been seeing.

Issue 1: The header issue - exactly what MCWB posted earlier this morning:

Code: Select all
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/content/d/7/0/d70users/html/thumbname.php:20) in /home/content/d/7/0/d70users/html/includes/sessions.php on line 188

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/content/d/7/0/d70users/html/thumbname.php:20) in /home/content/d/7/0/d70users/html/includes/sessions.php on line 189

I've not seen this issue for well over an hour, and I'm hoping this one is stomped. If you see this beyond this point in time and you have refreshed your index page (F5 or Ctrl-R), please let me know.

Issue 2: This is the email issue; you'll see this after trying to make a posting on the forum, or trying to send a PM. It's the email notifications that are failing; we're working on this one.

Issue 3: I'm not sure if this is the same issue thatg you're reporting Glen. I have seen a message along the lines of "system unavailable due to maintenance or capacity issues. Please try later". Was this what you saw, Glen?

I've asked for details of why this occurred ...

Gary, sorry after my long post I clicked past it pretty fast in frustration, but there was definitely a specific line in there which said "too many users" or "too many connections" which obviously didn't relate to this specific board as we had 8 + 2 guests. Next time I will copy the message.

No worries Glen. It does sound like a different issue to the one that I saw earlier.

Of course, now I'm remembering why I switched to self-hosting about 6 years ago ....

Damnit.

It disappeared for a while and reared its ugly head... not you, Fozzie... the error.

ATM this error seems to be occurring very infrequently, to the point of no longer being even of nuisance value. If that situation changes, then I'll need to deal with it, but if we're down to just a few occurrences a week, I think I can live with that.

My guess (based on a couple of things I saw during the week) was that we had about four occurrences in the last week.

Mind you, I'm (mostly) only aware of this from what people tell me; I checked with all of the mods over the last week and they said it seemed fine; if others have a different POV, please let us know.

If worse comes to worse, you'll probably just end up accidentally sending messages through twice, whether they're private messages or posts to a thread.
