Question on Macro mode for Sigma 70-300 APO super II

Postby pl55 on Thu Oct 28, 2004 9:34 pm

Hi all,
Just received my new extra toys: Nikon 50 F1.8 D and Sigma 70-300 APO super II. Nice new toys :-).
Just a question- when I put this lens in Macro mode it is at 200-300, what is the advantage if it's in macro or normal mode and focal length set at 300mm. for example for shooting bird ( feather variety offcourse ! ), all I can see is the same zoom at 300mm. Thanks in advance.

pl55, when you are in macro mode, you should be able to focus on objects much closer to the lens than you could in non-macro mode at 300mm.

My Tamron 70-300 only allows macro between 200 and 300.

Have you checked the instructions?

Hi Gary ,

Yes, there is minimal instruction that came with the sigma lens.

I know that macro only at 200-300. But this morning, I tried to take some shots of a blue wrench approx 3-4 m away. I set the lens to macro and telephoto at 300 and achieved the same shot at both modes. So I assumed that if an object with a distance of longer than 3-4m then if one tried to zoom in at 300 focal length then it doesn't matter in tele or macro mode. Not sure if this is correct ????

pl55, that appears to be the case. Macro must just enable much closer focusing
