Cleaning a CRT screenHi all,
Just wondering how most ppl here cleaned there CRT screens, i.e what with? I'm need to get rid of a few finger prints from mine, and before I do it thought I'd ask what best to do here on the forum. Cheers, Geoff.
Geoff,
I use eye glasses cleaning fluid and cloth on my work 'CRT'. Normally do it twice. Spray a small amount of the fluid on the cloth then wipe until screen clean. fozzie
When people ask what equipment I use - I tell them my eyes.
Hi Geoff - fill the bath with warm water and throw the monitor in - recommend that it be disconnected from the mains first
But seriously, any type of glass cleaner will do the job Chris

Hahaha Chris! I thought I heard somewhere that glass cleaner wasn't a good idea, don't know why or when I heard this but just seem to remember that it wasn't a good idea...thanx ppl
Geoff.
Glass cleaners are not so good on LCD screens, I don't know what to use on them, they smear easy.
But glass cleaner, never sprayed directly onto the screen - always onto the cloth, works well for CRTs. Windex runs down the glass, into the controls at the bottom, and they stop working. That's why onto the cloth, not the screen. To clean the outside plastic bits, spray & wipe is great - onto the cloth first too. Let it cool down first too, so it doesn't smear the dust on the plastic - it dries too fast if warm. You could always try lens cleaner... it is only glass! Share what you know, learn what you don't.

My sister managed to ruin one of my CRT monitors a couple of years back by using Windex on it. It attacked the coating and the wiping action caused permanent smears. Perhaps the coatings are better these days, but I would still be reluctant to use anything but very mild soapy water and a couple of tissues. Incidentally, this is how I clean my LCDs. Dust is easy to get off with compressed air, feather duster or purpose made cloth.
Cheers Matt
Use a soft cloth (sold in Woollies) damp it with warm water and wipe out all the spots.
With LCD, use a soft paint brush to brush all the dust first and use some products sold in store called LCD cleaning aids or something similar. I hardly clean my LCDs by anything else, a soft Paint brush will give it well cleaned out of dusts. Last edited by birddog114 on Tue Apr 12, 2005 12:03 pm, edited 1 time in total.

That's very interesting expression I have to memorize ... wife out .... Mikhail
Hasselblad 501CM, XPAN, Wista DX 4x5, Pentax 67, Nikon D70, FED-2
Mild warm water + dishwashing liquid (very mild) + a soft cloth will clean all finger prints and marks on both LCD + CRT monitors.
Use Giotto Air or Paint brush to blow the dust off first. Both LCD and CRT don't like chemical with alcohol, and dust will scratch its surface like the paint coating on your car. Birddog114

A good source of very mild detergent is Johnson's Baby Shampoo, this is what the guys who put the tinting on my car used and recommended for cleaning windows with tint applied, apparently it has no added chemicals.
Cheers What's another word for "thesaurus"?
