Backlight and flashed - suggestions?
Hi guys,
I've always loved shots that are taken at dusk but the model is nicely illuminated and looks slightly unnatural against the background. I tried that out here. I'm not looking for compositional critique but would appreciate your comments on the lighting. I like the vignestting on all corners, and the way Sam is fixed on another point but nicely lit. Comments appreciated

Matt - a nice shot but two things strike me. One - why do you like the vignetting? The second point is that I feel that there is not enough differential between your subject and the background, lighting wise that is.

Hi Chris, I dont know why I like the vignetting it just appeals to my aesthetic. I suppose it reminds me of some fashion work I have seen - not comparing this to that!! I agree about the light differential, I had the onboard flash toned down quite a bit. I'm getting into using the flash a lot more recently, and I think that after the 12-24mm, the 105mm macro, is the SB800.
I really struggle with this lighting thing as well Matt. Nice shot but would a half stop of extra fill just made the model Sam?? lift out of the scene a bit more??

It looks good to me if a tad dark. I think that's one of the evils of flash photography is the light qualities being different if there is a sunlit scene in the background.
I'm sort of a sucker for vignetting too though I do it rarely, and I don't mind the vignetting here. I find that it's really hit and miss for some people, and those prone to like it will like it and those prone to disliking it will generally dislike it. For me more often than not I like it as it creates a frame in the photo that allows your eyes to travel into the frame gently and I guess it's one way someone like me can appear artistic without actually applying artistic skills.
Nice shot, good lighting but a tad flat, can be fixed with some pp in PSCS....... my only other concern is the lamp post growing out of the subjects head.......

It's a type of salad dressing. 
Seriously, It's a darkening of the corners of the image due to a badly designed lenshood or a wide angle lens that has been poorly designed. Go back to the image in question and check out the corners of the image. Regards

Like I say, the composition isnt that great, it was more the lighting that I was interested. I like your description of the light Matt K, thats pretty much what I like too. Muchos gracias amigos matt
