As promised yesterday, here they are Oh well, this one is my first picture ever. Could have been worse Our pet possum living in the wild. Her name is Mr Wishus, Looking towards the Sunshine Coast from the front verandah I discovered the focussing ring before taking the last two No post processing though Up to page 20 of the manual! Thanks fellas
What's next? This question is probably kinda dumb, but I'll ask it anyway The kit lens has a M and A/M mode. If the lens is set to A/M mode, shouldn't there be a zoom and focussing function, just as there is on a lot of video cameras? I find that I have to frame the photo by turning the front part of the lens and then use the focussing ring regardless whether the lens is set to M or A/M Something is not quite right here and I'm looking for enlightenment please. Cheers Graham
It's right Bago, you are just a techno child who hasn't seen the world through manual eyes joking
Turning the front of the lens changes the focal length (or zooming) that is the creative and physical part by the phographer. Aperture, shutter speed and auto focus can be automated but zooming isn't usually on a slr, though it does get automated on point and shoots, initially because they used digital zooms
Bago,
Congrats on the new member of the family.
Welcome to the world of SLRs. That's exactly correct; the front ring is your zoom ring, and on SLRs, zooming's a manual operation. Sometimes it's a twist action, as you've seen on the kit lens; if you have a 70-300, you'd find it's a push-pull action, where you telescope or compress the lens to cause the zoom. g.

Graham, the focus should happen when you do a half press of the shutter button (assuming you have auto focus on, which I think you would) zoom - manual focus - auto You shouldn't need to turn the focus ring unless you have chosen manual focus cheers Greg - - - - D200 etc
