Firefox.A quick thank you to all that recommended firefox as a browser. Much, much quicker than the IE6 Bloatware.
I used to always be a Netscape user up until a couple of years ago when Mozilla stopped fighting the browser war!! Nice to see that they are having another go. Quick Question: The only thing that seems to be missing is a "history" tab a la IE6. Does it have one I've missed or is it available via the extensions (which I haven't explored yet)?
John,
Hit Ctrl+H and you will bring up the history panel Also just fyi, Firefox is the only web browser that adheres to the standards set by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium who standardises website code and accessibility, etc). M$IE claim this but they don't and the only reason why they're getting away with it is because they have the majority of the market, however Firefox is slowly catching up...i think in the vicinity of 20% of global users use Firefox as the browser of choice now Last edited by PiroStitch on Mon Apr 18, 2005 11:07 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Firefox.
Have a look on the menus - it's under the "GO" menu item *** When getting there is half the fun! ***
An interesting point - I have had Firefox for some time but have never really used it.
For the past couple of days I have been having a wee bit of trouble with my normal browser (Safari on a Mac). After reading through this thread I decided to update my Firefox and it works brilliantly. For other Mac users: I have just updated to OSX 10.3.9 and the problem with Safari started with the update Chris

Who here (who is a mac user) uses IE? I'd just like to know as that's the browser I have the most trouble with at work (web development)
St G Yes, I will give Firefox a go EDIT: Firefox works with St George - woohoo Chris

I've been using Firefox for ..hmm, must be well over a year now, and Thunderbird for email, love them both!
Now with broadband as of an hour ago when I got my rather complex microwave link going )) Transmitter in Tamworth .)))))) 30km))) Receiver on my hill----transmitter on hill.)))) ~500metres ))) receiver under eaves outside-----10m cable to laptop At some stage I'll probably go wireless for the laptop too, I have run it wireless on the hill successfully. I'm using thunderbird as well but it doesn't seem to like my inbox....1000+ emails. I guess I need to sort it into folders
Hi Pirostitch
I have a Mac at work with Safari/IE5/Firefox/Camino (formerly Chimera)/Opera/OmniWeb and Netscape on it for testing purposes and would heartily recomend Firefox, apart from Camino its my favourite browser. I'm sure the rest are there to make my life harder - why can't they all render pages the same grrrrrrr! CC
I am trying firefox at the moment after another thread highlighted it.
But I am a tad disappointed. It seems to take longer to load web pages and ebay jsut come up with CODE , no web page. I do like though puting my fave links at the top of the page. MATT
I love Firefox for TWO reason.
1. The tabs. 2. It's not Microsoft. AustralianIT.com.au ran an article about it the other day, pointing out that the programmer who coded it is so young and Micro$oft is concerned that they are losing market share to a freeware programme that is better than their product. Steve.

Yes, they're two of my reasons for liking it.
They were also two of the reasons I tried the new Netscape. I came away with the following confusion: How can something based on Firefox suck that much? From what I'm hearing in a lot of the tech. circles, IE 7 will be a force to be reckoned with. They're pulling in tabs, they're apparently going to make it less buggy (Hah. Hahahahahahahaha.), etc... Basically, they're doing what they should have done a long time ago and are now going to copy Mozilla to gain their marketshare back. The sad part? It very well could work. Chris, I also seemed to have a couple of Safari crashes on the weekend (also after updating to 10.3.9). Crashes happened while trying to access NAB online trading. So I reluctantly went back to IE for that exercise! thinks to self: perhaps stockmarket crash = Safari crash!
Mark - update to Firefox (free download) - I managed to get my bank with this program Chris

I still use Netscape 7.2 for this same reason, Firefox is quick, but I'd like to see more than just the code. I'm also using Thunderbird as my email client most of the time now and would probably switch to Firefox if it displayed more web pages correctly and if it could do the send page that Netscape can do. IE7 won't even support CSS 2 let alone CSS 3....need I say more
That's never stopped Microsoft from doing well with a browser.
Look at IE 4 and the lack of Java in hopes people would catch on to Active X. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Chris, You may want to have a look at at Apple's Article ID: 301380 which deals with Java and Safari issues after updating to Mac OS X v10.3.9
Here is a tut on how to speed up firefox http://www.ipkonfig.com/cms/index.php?o ... mitstart=0
Thanks for the link Holden, I've just made the changes. Hard to say right away if things are faster. Will know once I do a bit of browsing.

To the guys who are having safari issues, Apple updated Safari to v1.3 which apparently has a lot of the same internals as Safari 2 will have in Tiger. Apparently this includes quite a few Javascript engine changes. There are also some issues with Java in 10.3.9 which may be contributing to your issues with that site.
There is also a new security update and a Java fix in Software Update right now. Firefox (or Camino) is something you probably should have anyways. Most things that dont work with Safari do with Firefox, but the differences in the UI generally keep me away from Firefox unless I need it for a specific reason. Without wanting to start a war, I just want to pass on some of my experiences with my Mac as well. I work in a reasonably high-end IT engineering role which involves a mixture of *nix and (primarily) MS OS's. I got a G5 PowerMac (1.8 single Rev1) about 18 months ago for home. Since then, my Windows PC has only been used to download my dive computer data and gets looked at once every few weeks to make sure its virus scanners and OS patches are up to date. I used to spend 1-2 hours a week doing this on my XP box. In comparison, Ive probably spent a total of around 1/2 a day administering the Mac since I got it. Im probably not as fast when working on the Mac, since I still spend 8-12 hrs a day working in Windows, but I FAR prefer the user experience in OS X. I actually enjoy coming home to do stuff on the Mac whereas I used to spend half my time swearing at the PC. OS X gets out of your way and it just works! Oh, and the automatically available spell checker in Cocoa apps is kinda nice too (spell checked web posts) Smile; it makes people wonder what you have been up to.
I have been using Firefox well forever and love it - I have some really good extensions but this one is great.
Forecast Fox - You can set it up to display the weather forcast in your toolbar or status bar. It is automatically updated. Here is the link for it. https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=398 Cheers
Georgie
