How much would this cost?

Postby johndec on Wed Apr 27, 2005 8:47 pm

I realise that prosumer DSLR's are built to a price and so I was wondering (dreaming) how much a camera of the following specs would cost. For fun lets call it a D200

1. D70(s) body with optional vertical grip. (Minimize expense of a new body)

2. Viewfinder of D2H or D2X.

3. Mostly the same frame rates, AF, metering, file formats, etc, etc as the D70, after all we are working to a price point (although the CAM2000 AF module would be nice).

4. The expensive bit: the D2X CMOS

5. I can live without the D2X high speed mode.

Comments, additions or subtractions welcome, but don't get greedy....

The one major thing you did not include in your list is the D2X AF system - far superior to the D70 - $3,500 sounds right although $2,000 would be better :D

The D2X at $2000 would be just fine, thanks.

Metal or plastic outer skin? Personally I don't give a toss either way, as Nikon has so far released superbly build DSLRs (the D50 remains to be seen).

The D2Hs could very well be the mid range "prosumer" replacement for the D100 - nearly all the features of the D2X but missing some vitals that doesn't quite make it flagship material.

$AU2995 retail would be tempting.

Just cleaned my glasses, and so you did

Kipper the D2H has the CAM2000 unit as well - very nice.

I don't think so for 2 reasons.

1. Not all "prosumers" want the bulk of an inbuilt vertical grip.

2. 4mp. The great unwashed will sacrifice features for a larger MP number, even if they never print anything larger than 6x4 (and Canon, Nikon, et al, only have themselves to blame for this).
