I used to buy most of my equipment and medical textbooks from there.
I can't find it on the website, but I remember that they had a full skeleton on display. I know you can buy real/plastic skeletons and I'm sure you'd be able to get a skull from them, or they would know where to get one. Probably an idea to give them a call. They are on the top end of Elizabeth St in Parkville.

If you can't get one, as a workaround, you might be able to photograph a skull or two at the Melbourne Museum. THey are sure to have some floating around in there somewhere. If you ask nicely, they might even let you into the 'vault' where i know they have a collection of all sorts of dead people.

Does it have to be a human skull? Would a Floriensis or an Australopithecus make do?

they sound like a great ideas guys, but i wanted to do a studio shot of a hamlet-like scene. though i do want it to be in the homo species, i am after something that not expensive and wouldn't be too much trouble to have in my possession for a day or so. i hate to break the remains of state museum prized collections of the first human skulls.

phillip b the machine you are describing is made by stereolithography. sounds big and is bloody expensive. i checked this out about 2 years ago and did my bit and thought it was a great idea. these machines use a laser to impregnate a 3d rendering or should i say 3D piece of resin in your hands. the concept and fruition is constantly used by the car manufacturing industry to come up with prototypes for motor vehicle parts and designs. it can be used in a lot of different applications BUT a small machine will cost around $250,000.00 scary shit if you dont have a market.

they had a reasonably priced one for 36$ but a 6 weeks waiting period!
the costume store wanted 20$ to hire out a tiny plastic head! or a deformed skull mask.
a magic store nearby had a half skull made of foam for 14$

Go to a warehouse that sells medical supplies. med students can buy anatomically correct skulls/bones etc for academic research. Or if you know a doctor he probably has one that he will lend you. Go to it Yoric!

Is that the same machine they use for 3D fax? I saw a show where they faxed a skull to another machine, and that machine reproduced an exact replica of the skull.

Shame about the wait at spp Redline.
If you are around Melbourne Uni area again, you might want to look at the Brownless Library in the Medical school area (just ask someone). It's in Parkville and not too far from SPP.
It usually has a board up with ads for second hand medical books/equipment. You might be able to get a skull with some luck. If it's no longer there, just ask a couple of the students in the medical school area.
You can also try the anatomy museum whilst you are there. I doubt if they would let you borrow the skull, not being a student, but you could go in and take some photos at least.
Unfortunately, I'm no longer studying there so a few things may have changed, but worth a try.
As for other medical suppliers - not that many round town. SPP is the main place for Melb Uni medical stuff. Not sure about Monash area.

i visted that place a couple of years back, not sure if they have a spare parts bin. but considering there were all real specimens i doubt they have anything made of plastic.
i called up heap of places that delt with anatoimical models most places wanted 80$-150$ and upwards. do you have the number of their bookstore? i might give them a call.
