Laptop mainly for photo's

Sorry couldn't post in the computer forum so i'll put it in here - something about not having access - only clocked up 10 posts so far so i imagine that's it.

I am looking at buying a laptop. i am currenty using my parents desktop but am moving soon. The reason i decided on getting a laptop is cause i'll be moving about a bit i won't really have the space to set up a desktop.

It won't be used for anything special other than normal word processing and the net. The main use would be for storing and processing photo's (using photoshop elements)

What sort of requirements would i need, and don't need.

Where can i get a bargin and is there anything i should really steer clear of.

have a look at Apple iBooks and Powerbooks..........

I have had an iBook 12in and it was great but upgraded to a 12in powerbook just to get a DVD burner and airport card. I now hang a 20in Apple monitor off this little beauty and it is quicker than my G5 iMac.

And as much RAM as you can afford... Photoshop needs lots of RAM

Well really whichever notebook you buy, its got to suit your needs. I recently bought a P4 3.3ghz laptop with a 15.4" screen to do what i need, but its probably a bit extreme for you (hungry on the battery too ), but i really wanted the grunt for work I do.

So things you need to take into consideration:


CPU speed (more so with non apple laptops)

Amount of RAM the laptop has - make sure its expandable

HDD space - are you going to store all your photos on this only?

Backup method - I would certainly suggest aiming for a laptop with a dvd-rw drive, HDD's can fail - many people have been down this path before

Also make sure the screen is really clear, will make post processing a lot easier

yeah definatly getting a dvd rw drive. I will keep looking and go to a few stores and see what i can find. will probably have to put it off for a little while thought because of finances - need to sell one of my cars first.
