Hiring Lenses

Postby kipper on Tue May 03, 2005 11:56 pm

Well, I know I probably won't be able to afford the lenses that I need for bird photography until I'm old and done all the things that is the norm to do eg. buy a house. So I was wondering if it was possible to hire prime telephoto lenses. I know you can hire bodies for events, but can you hire for instance a 600mm or 800mm prime telephoto lens? If so, how much would it cost. If it is possible, where in Melbourne should I look?

Kipper, when I was a member of the Nikon Professional Services Club we could hire lenses at a very reasonable cost. This was based in Sydney, but there was also a branch in Melbourne. You might be able to find about it on the Maxwell Nikon Club site (http://www.nikonclub.com.au/) but a cursory glance doesn't show it.
There's also a Sydney firm called Bell Photographics (or something like that) which hires them out. Regards, Tim

Ok I'll have a check. My 70-200VR covers the 300MM focal length but for small birds you need a 600MM with a TC easy.

Camera Exchange did have a 500 for sale but haven't been in there myself recently (too much temptation). I thought about hiring before going to Borneo and enquired at Kayell in Collingwood. They seemed to have the best range of lenses. Definitely worthwhile giving them a call.

I sent them an email today at work. Nothing back yet. From what I saw on their website they only had like 70-300s for hire. So I sent them an email to see if they had anything up the 600mm prime range.
