How to create this border?Hi All,
I have asked this question before (not sure if it was here or at DPReview?) and never really got a good answer, so I'll ask again. I would love to know how to make (or if there are any good actions to download) borders as displayed in the image below, see how it is a little uneven, a lit rough etc... I hope I don't get into trouble for posting the above image so to try and soften it up the image is from our wedding photographers site, David Oliver (http://www.davidoliver.com.au). I HIGHLY recommend him or weddings etc... (not cheap though). Anyway has anyone seen, done or heard of this style of border? Cheers, W00DY Andrew

Here's how to put the black border around the pic....but this is not an uneven border. In PS SELECT/select all.....EDIT/STROKE...select 16 pixels. Now...to make the border uneven you will have to select a part of it and go to FILTER/distort and put a slight bend into it.
Regards
Matt. K
in photoshop make your stroke and then with the eraser tool come back over the area with a sharp pencil tool maybe 5 pixels by holding the shift key at the beginning of the stroke so as it ends up in a single pass make sure the background colour in your pallette is white
shoot it real.

Woody, let us know how your experiment works. I would like to see this as an action of possible. Please post your work when done.

If you have Peter Inova's D70 DVD it has Photoshop actions on the DVD that emulate the effect your after.
I think it would be a "filed negative carrier" that produces these effects. I've been working on a few in Photoshop but haven't come too close.
Woody, Paul (and other interested parties) Some of you probably know already that the iNovaFX Film Border actions don't work in PS versions earlier than CS. I've got PS7 and have been liasing with Peter about a fix for these actions but I haven't got one to work yet. The problem lies in the text portion of the action that puts the writing and/or photo numbers around the perforated edge like on a film negative strip. For some reason, this crashes the action and you're left with a lovely border but no writing and no image in the middle. Shouldn't be a problem with CS but, obviously, I haven't been able to test that. Simon. Simon

Woody,
The iNova ebook is well worth the spend. It's incredibly informative, very entertaining and the actions and curves that come with it make it very good value. It also includes another ebook called RAW Materials which, not surprisingly, covers evrything you wanted to know about RAW but were afraid to ask. Go to http://www.hipper.com.au and follow the link to Nikon & Sony Ebooks. I only give the home page address 'cos you may like to stooge around some other stuff they've got here. I love the glasses PC!! But I can't be spending my money on that sort of gear when I have to save up for Photoshop CS..... Simon

Any movement on this? I would really like to see an action based border and not have to use a 3rd party application.
I am a newbie, but I have been doing a border around my images for awhile now. I have set up an action for this too. It is similar to deviantart but easier.
The way I do it is, in PS make the background colour black. Then go to Image, Canvas size. I change the width and height to 1% and then click OK. Very straight forward and easily made into an action. Also by doing it as a percentage it will be the same size on every image.
Yep, this is how I make borders on PS too - very easy, and you can make a border with multiple colours and widths by just repeating the method. I used to use the % method, but now I tend to increase the canvas size by a certain amount (eg 1cm) so the border size is the same on all sides. Frank My photo gallery: http://www.frankalvaro.net

I doubt Peter will be able to come up with anything prior to Photoshop CS, as I believe CS was the first to introduce Actions which can be created by people with no programming experience. I believe prior to Photoshop CS the only way you could do such a thing would be with a Plugin, which requires the Photoshop SDK and programming experience in C/C++ (not sure if it supports VB or Delphi).

The reason I use 1% is that I have made an action (I just press SHIFT F2) and it will do it automaticaly for me. It is slightly wider on one edge but 1% doesnt show up that much at all. If I used 1cm with my action and the image was a 10x8 it wouldn't be major but 1cm on a 6x4 or smaller is a very wide border.
The original post (and myself) are looking for a sloppy border, similar to a Filed Negative Carrier from the film days.
Simple stroke borders are easy, this one's a bear.
Chris, you beat me to it!
I've been using Actions in Photoshop since 1995..They've become increasingly powerful over the years but the general method was always there. Graphic Designers would get RSI without Actions!! Liam =]
I am sorry if there's a misunderstanding here ...
How did this evolve to actions, from creating a sloppy border? It seems that the original question has been lost, completely.
for all using the CS SUITE place your images in illustrator and go to town with the filter boarders. open your brain and create. dont rely on prefab shit! be creative. some people only use PS 7 sorry if i have offended you! NOT!
shoot it real.
