First decent evening photoshoot

Thought i might as well post up a few of my first decent (IMO) photo's since getting my D70 now 5 days ago. Composition is slowly coming back to me from my SLR days, and with any luck i'll even learn how to properly use the D70 so as not to only get 4 decent photos out of 40.

My favourite of the bunch, with the light reflecting off the windows of the building opposite it completely flared out the lighting exactly as i wanted it.


I liked this one with the dogs being walked as to me it showed that the world hadnt changed and life continued on as per normal outside these walls; the house was very eery to be in.


A simple shot framed by the 'entry' to the house.


Evening street shot after i came out and once the sun had dropped that last little bit.

Comments welcome. I'm just settling in with the new camera and its been a while since i actually went out shooting. Also i havent bothered PS'ing a border on these, but may add them later on if i feel (or other people feel) they are necessary.

Welcome and what an introduction with some very powerful images that most certainly display your talent from the days of film.

Your pic sizes are not to big - in fact that could be slightly bigger. If you keep the longest edge at 800 pixels or less you will be OK.

Great pics and they seem to tell a story.

I like #2 the best. Captured at the right moment. Did you know the dog walker was there or was it just captured at the perfect moment?

sirhc55 - I've been out of serious photography for a while now, but was spurred on by a recent collegue who bought a D70 for his trip to New York. Decided it was time to ditch the P&S digital i had and buy myself a nice present. I'll now mention that when i used the SLR i was 13 and it was a hand-me-down Nikon from my dad. After using that for 5 years i bought the digital. Now a few more years on and i'm back in the swing of it with my Nikon in hand. I won't put a figure on how old i am, but adequete hinting aside.

Pirostitch - These were taken in the abandoned house on Wellington St (between Alexandra Pde & Johnston St, Collingwood). I wouldn't recommend just hopping in there with a DSLR as it is an occupied building, however as i live locally i know the times the usual squatters are in there.

embi - No, i didnt know the dog walker... just happened to be going past at the time. I also got a very similar shot with a car going past, but it has a completely different feel to it. The human subject brings life back into the otherwise sterile and depressing shot. Perfect moment, complete luck.

The window to me is representative of another image, where the occupier of the dwelling has hang a picture of what they maybe dream of. The "other side". The lighter side of life, where you can go and walk the dog, etc.

I hadn't actually thought of it like that, but looking at the image again i can see it. As that is the only point of entry for the house/squat i took the photo with the intention of representing the 'front door.' As an Architecture student, entry's and their focus play an important role in my designs.
