Nikkor 105mm Micro - Beginner's Question

OK... Day 3 with this marvellous new lens, but I'm suddenly a little confused...

The manual aperture settings on the lens go down to F32, but if the EXIF is to be believed, I managed to take a photo at F57

Does the lens stop down further under control from the camera, or is the EXIF data misleading??? The offending photo was taken with the SB-800 mounted...

John, firstly, nice photo. One suggestion, try your diffusion dome on the SB800.

Secondly, I noticed the same thing. I had f36 in the exif. Very strange.

I did use the diffusion dome for many of my pics this arvo and used the screen and reflection card for others... Unfortunately this info is not recorded in the EXIF...

Note to self: if you are experimenting, it might be useful to take notes of what you did... Better still, when is someone going to invent a voice recorder that can be attached to the USB port of the D70 for voice notes for each photo???

Hate to say it but this is a Nikon thing - they always like to be bigger and better

I must say my Sigma macro has always appeared to have correct exif data



edit The present Nikon 105 macro is an old design, this version being released in 1990, updated for flash in 93, all of this prior to any D series bodies. Maybe they have a problem metering properly in macro due to their age?

*sigh* There is no error or reason for confusion!

f/ratio in macro = (1+ magnification) X indicated aperture.

so, if you are at a 1:1 reproduction and think you are at f/32, you are really at 2X32 =F/64! The effective fl is increasing as you extend the lens, you can see the aperture change in the viewfinder as you move the focus closer. Strangely my 105 only goes up to f/51 though

Now I'm wondering if the SB-800 recognises these larger f numbers??? Nearly all of the shots I took yesterday were horribly under exposed when using TTL flash setting... I didn't look at the display on the flash to make sure it was using the same aperture as the camera...
Time for some more experiments I think!!!

Yep, at the higher mags you get a higher effective fstop...

the matrix meter on your d70 should talk to the sb-800...

Where is the flash being mounted when you're using it for macro shots?

If it's close to the subject (such as mounted on the camera) then it may be too close to be giving you accurate metering. That's where a low powered, lens mounted ring flash comes in handy.

Or an SC-29 cord to allow you to quickly hold the flash anywhere you want without having to go into Commander mode.

A peice of paper, fold it, make hole for lens...
Works well...

Or: Get the flash off the camera and on to a stand/tripod

Yep - it was mounted on the camera...
So maybe i need to use manual flash settings and experiment further???

I would, but my onboard flash isn't working at the mo... slight argument with some concrete... I therefore can't use the Commander mode... I might have to bit the bullet and commit to the 3-week Maxwell repair time...

Thanks for the suggestion though... I saw MHDs setup on Saturday and that looks to be the way to go...

yeah... I just got my 105 micro in the mail today!!! no light outside to get pictures of the flowers~! horrible, horrible.. anyways! I was going to post and ask about the f/ because when I was shooting I was focused all the way out and the f/ read 2.8, then I went to max and it was at 5... I thought that was odd... I did some DOF checks (using the preview, not pictures) and it didn't seem to change? How can the f/ change and the DOF not? Also.. my data only seems to go up to f/ 32... I was reading about f/ 57?!?!?
