Online Image Hosting

Postby Greg B on Wed Nov 03, 2004 2:07 pm

This has been discussed before, and I have re-read the threads. But we have a lot more members now.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good online image hosting site? I have seen smugmug, fotopic, and the one that Matt uses.....

But I would be interested to hear anyone's view on particularly good sites, say costing less than AUD50 p.a., decent amount of space, allow direct linking, stable, that sort of thing.

cheers

The above mentioned sites are all good...

I'm in the process of getting my broadband connection changed from 1500mb 2gb to 1500 unlimited, in which case I will be offering only d70users very very cheap hosting on my webservers... probably 1gb storage to start of with... using gallery...

servers are already setup in a cluster and well firewalled yada yada yada... so stability will not be an issue...

will let you know more in due course...

Those you mentioned are good and I love the idea of a D70 only site. I use "smugmug" but I like the ability of "pbase" because it has a camera search function so you can view foto's taken with a spesific camara in my case a D70 of course

I also use SmugMug and am very happy with it... The are it does fall down though is in it's search functions, that is if you are just randomly looking at albums.

The serch within an album is very good.

The issue is not one of speed, but of bandwidth. Images are, by their very nature, large-ish files, and thus can potentially consume a lot of your bandwidth. With a 1500 DSL connection, your outbound speed is just 256, and it will only take two or three users each downloading a 1MB image file to bring your conection to its knees.

Why do you think I'm not hosting everybody's images here? :)

I would certainly like to - and I'm perfectly happy to - but I don't want the performance of the board to suffer.

Greg... I'd recommend PBASE... or why don't you set up your own webserver?

cheers

Hi everyone

I am not trying to step on anyones toes, but if you want FREE image hosting, check out my site http://www.pixspot.com

I am using Coppermine gallery on the site, which I have had up for a while but no work has been done on it due to UNI and work commitments (I am studying a BA Information Technology and a BA Multimedia as well as run my own company). I will be working on the site further after 23rd November (my last exam for this year).

The site is hosted on the following server (which I own)

Dual Xeon Processor
Genuine Intel Server Motherboard
Four SCUSI Ultra 320 Hard Drives @ 15000 rpm
Raid 5 Configuration (For Total Redundancy)
1 GIG RAM
1 Gigabyte Connection To The Internet
1 Gigabyte Connection To WAIX

Cheers

good luck with the final exams...

No, it is not hosted at the UNI. My husband and I own an IT company and a number of high end servers. All my servers are located in a data centre in Perth, where I lease space (the servers are not leased - I actually own these and they were built by my husband and an employee).

Thanks for the well wishes with the exams...

Cheers
