Nikon Capture 4.1 crashes Dell Insprion 9300 laptopNikon Capture 4.1.x crashes my new laptop Dell Insprion 9300 (Window XP and SP2) and many other new PCs.
So beware of the new PC upgrade!
Re: Nikon Capture 4.1 crashes Dell Insprion 9300 laptop
That's happenned with one of our member: pluckaduck, he got the same new model Insp. 9300. He brought over the meet and no one can help. Poor Dell guys! but not other PCs as far as I known. I run XPP with SP2 and all worked well on the P4 PCs Birddog114

That's strange
I have a brand new Pentium 4 PC and it works fine. When you say it crashes, how so? Peter

I would remove SP2, and get rid of the Dell.
In no particular order. More seriously, did you reboot after installing? How is your SP2 Firewall (mis)configured? Disable that, and see what happens. My guess is that NC is behaving badly in the way that it's trying to call home when you load it. The SP2 Firewall is probably rejecting the attempts to call home, and NC hasn't got a clue how to deal with that, hence it goes down in a screaming heap. g.

Glen's problem is difference, he used the NC 4.1xxx to install and the old code did not work and he had to start install the NC 4.0 then used the u/g path. With pluckaduck's "Hell Insp. 9300" we uninstalled NC and started from 4.0 and it crashed as soon as we attempted to click to NC icon. Birddog114

I thought you already solved the problems with NC 4.0. Sorry, I withdraw my earlier post. Birddog114

That is what mine does Birddy. NC crashes when I touch the NC icon on version 4 and 4.1 (or is it 4.2). If I upgrade them without using inbetween to 4.21 it will open but requires a new key to activate which I don't have. Seems the old software is incompatible with the new chipset.
Yes, it's! where's your "GOLD KEY" ? Birddog114

I'm not sure what chipset I've got on my ASUS, but it's a centrino 1.7, freshlyminted in July last; it's had no problems running any version of NC thus far.

Mine is the 740 chipset, 1.7ghz
this is the model no W5GA740DD58PGW and an info page http://www.synnex.com.au/Default.aspx?t ... genumber=0
Mine seems to be listed as M6SNe735DD58PG, which is also a Centrino 1.7, but the 735 CPU, rather than the 740. I don't believe that there would be any functional differences between the 735 and 740; the Asus catalogue lists the M715-770 as being applicable to my model, and the M730-770 for yours.
Where there may be a difference is in the supporting chipset - mine uses the Intel 855PM while yours uses the 915GM What does the Hell Insprion 9300 use? g.

My guess is that it's the 915 - and that's the chipset that's somehow incompatible with earlier NC versions.
Mine was basically empty when I tried to install it, so I doubt conflicting software. The 4.21 opened no problem so I am assuming a hardware incompatibility. Not a huge concern as my screen is 12" so tend to use the desktop for downloading but still have Nikon View on the lappy so I can download in the field. One day I will find a golden key
I think the 9300s are all Dothan-cored CPUs aren't they, rather than the Banias-cored CPUs in Gary and Glen's laptops, so it's common to both... 4.2.1 works ok though Glen? Does 4.2.1 work ok on the 9300? Bugger, was considering a centrino-based notebook for PP on the go!
Trent, I uninstalled 4.21 as I didn't want thirty days of sucess followed by failure when no key arrived. Also was installing MS Office and finance software and didn't want it confusing anything. It seemed to go ok, but will need a golden key to get past thirty days (which has nothing to do with compatibility with my chipset)
No, mine is a Dothan. g.

Glen, Yours is the Dothan and/ uses the DDR2 memory same as the "Hel Insp 9300". Birddog114

Glen, yours is a Sonoma. If it has a 915 northbridge, and supports DDR2 - it's a Sonoma. The Banias was the first generation labelled "Centrino", and Dothan was the mid-life refresh/upgrade that hardly added any extra features other than minor speed increases. Architectually they're very similar, which is more than can be said for the Dothan to Sonoma transition (SATA HD support, DDR2, etc.)
Onyx, you are right. I live about 2 kilometres from Northbridge and 915 sounds like the bus number which goes there. I think I am miles out of my depth in this thread and will just wait till I find a golden key
Glen, Don't worry too much, I might have a golden key soon. Birddog114

Hell I thought Northbridge was in Perth and Glen says it's near him in Sydney Peter

Stubbsy, thats the nightclub Northbridge, I live near the retirement Northbridge where Bob Hawke lives (maybe he likes living about 4 kms from John Howard so he can drop in and have afternoon tea?)
One of the great thing about this board is where else can you get a busload of computer gurus to give an opinion on your computer and actually want to help you fix it? ps Stubbsy, thank you very much for your tip on straightening horizons in Capture, used it last night before a few prints out with the new R1800. I almost feel qualified to give PP lessons now, I can crop, change levels, sharpen and straighten horizons!!
Now you just need to remember to feed the paper in straight.

It's actually easier to just tilt the printer.
But you need to be very careful with water shots, 'cos if you tilt the printer too far forward, you'll get your shoes wet from the spillage. g.

Hi, Swanson, Glen and those who might have NC4.1 crashes, try the
following which worked for me in Windows XP : go to control panel |Regional and Language Options |Advanced under "Language for non-unicode programs" set it to "English (Australia)" if it is some non-english chosen. click apply / ok reboot the system. hope that will help. cheers
Thanks, good thoughts! Birddog114

Hi Glen, since you didn't say it worked, i assume that was not.
the solution i gave the other day just came off my memory at that time, its been a while since i installed the NC4 and sp2, last night i sat down and checked again, there are two other things that need to be set which i assumed they were set by default, or i might have changed them the moment i upgraded sp2, i always hate those additional restrctions. anyway, IN ADDITON TO the last post, check and set the followings: 1. control panel | system | Advanced under "Performance" click "Settings" button go to "Data Execution Prevention" make sure the "Turn on DEP for essential Windows program and services only" option is chosen click Apply/ok if change has made 2. control panel | system | Advanced under "Startup and Recovery" click "Settings" button under "Default operating system" inside the box, the line should be like "Microsoft Windowns XP ... ...../NoExecute=OptIn" if it is /Execute, then change it to /NoExecute=OptIn. you can use the "Edit" button 3 lines down to edit the file boot.ini which contains that statement. Reboot the system. be sure to copy down the original option or statement in case you have to go back. those changes are at the kernel level, so becareful, and do it at your own risk. hope it helps this time. have a nice day. kaufuu
The problem is probably a simple software conflict - good ol' NC. My tip would be to have a dig through the startup folder and remove anything that is not absolutely essential (I only have Colorvision Startup here - all else is gone), then have a dig through the hidden startup (msconfig.exe) items and again, disable everthing that is non-essential (if in doubt Google it). Next stop for me would be services. Reconfigure unneccessary services to either disabled or manual start - do not use msconfig for this. There is a good chance that cleaning all of the rubbish out will allow NC to run.
Dell installs a lot of crap on their systems which is for the most part unnecessary. If you have a Dell printer, there is one of those startup items which may cause problems with NC. Dell Quickstart gave me a hard time with conflicts until I removed it completely - this one is not required anyway. Most of their network utilities are simply not needed. The list goes on. There is so much software these days that insists on inserting itself into the startup folders that simply does not need to be there. Clean 'em out and run with a leaner, faster computer. If it is DEP, disable it by changing ...NoExecute=OptIn to ...NoExecute=AlwaysOff in boot.ini. I doubt that is the problem though (that problem seems to be limited to AMD64 with hardware DEP) unless Intel has added hardware DEP to the latest P-M. Cheers Matt
Hi Kaufuu,
I tried the first and it didn't work, didn't repley because didn't want to make a big deal of it. Tried the DEP routine the first time, didn't work then either. Someone has sent me a piece of gold, will let people know if things are sucessful. If they are best to pm me in future on this.
Just a quick thought, after I loaded NC 4.2.1 last night
You have to be logged in as "Administrator" account to install NC. or it won't complete setup. Also I have a laptop and a PC. On the PC I had NC trial plus code and tried to upgrade -> failed? Laptop I installed from the “upgrade package” clean (no older NC on it) and it installed. I don't know if this helps but one other thing. Try loading into safe mode (press F5 or F8 a few times as the windows boots up) under administrator and try to install. Safe mode means very few third-party driver or extra software other than essential list executed in start-up. PS.... I have never tried installing software under "safe mode" maybe others can elaborate if this is feasible. I'm back

VK4CP, it's not the specific notebook, I believe it's the chipset (Sonoma/i915, aka laptops advertised with Pentium M/Centrino 730, 740, 750, 760 etc CPU, as opposed to 735, 745, 755 etc. CPU). Glen has an Asus and he reports the same crash conditions with NC too.
The older versions of Capture (pre-4.2) can be made to function beyond its 30 day trial period with commonly found serial numbers on the net (please do not read this as DSLRusers' encouragement, endorsement or support of software piracy - further discussion of this matter should be avoided on this public board). These can then be updated to the current versions for continued use. However since NC 4.2, the serial no. format was completely overhauled. Installing with a legitimate serial/key from the current versions of NC should eliminated all these issues. If you can live with the compromises in build quality and India-based tech support, The Inspiron 6000 seems to offer a good value package.
Capture CrasHi all
I have a new HP 6004 17inch laptop. P4 3.2 Also crashes when NC starts. Loads but when you click on it to start it crashes, not even a chance to put in the key. Have treid many things even utility to sort out the registry entries and re install. Gave up. It installed OK on my HP TC1100 Tablet PC also running XPP Tablet with serv pack 2. This one a P4 M processor. Works Fine but I need it on the laptop not the tablet. I will try some of the solutions posted. Thanks Cheers Albert
