Mountain Sunset

I was cleaning out my hard drive today, transferring old images onto disc, when I came across this one from my faithful old Kodak LS443. I did some slight levels and shadow adjusting, slapped on a frame and here it is. The location is looking north from a back road between Killarney and Boonah along the Queensland/NSW border. In fact, I think we had just crossed back into Queensland a few mintues prior to this shot. Mt Lindsay in the centre and the twin peaks of Mt Barney to the right.

There are some nice shades in the mountains and the sky.
The foreground is maybe a tad dark for such a large portion of the image.

Nice pix but on my screen it looks a bit flat maybe an increase in contrast

The new shot looks a lot better as there is a lot more detail and the shot still retains the mood of the first one..........

now all you have to do is have a look at russel browns site where a movie will show how to put in skys turn day into night........ a good excerise for this image, if you have lots of time, he does it in about 10 minutes

The extra detail in the foreground of the second shot really brings the scene to life... Like the gnarled old tree over on the right for added interest too...

Simon - I will the devil’s advocate and go with the original. My impression is that the varying shades in the mountain range are far more inducive viewing than seeing the whole pic. There is just enough detail in the original to know what it is - BUT - the eye (mine) sees the beauty of the varying shades of the mountains and sky. This gives it more of a Japanese feel of light and shade than in version 2.

Thank you Chris for a very considered response (not that the other opinions given here weren't 'considered')

I agree - chiefly because I like the simplicity of the lighter lines along the foreground ridges that aren't quite so highlighted in the second version (to my eye at least).

To me, the top photo seems to echo what I felt when I was standing there and that is the sky saying 'Move over earth, this is MY show now'.

Hopefully, there's something here to please the eye, whatever version people like. Can't help but think how good this shot would have been if I'd had my D70 then....
