Adope Camera Raw Question

Postby Pauld on Sun May 15, 2005 6:23 pm

Hi all

I have recently aquired a copy of Photoshop CS for the Mac (moving up from Photoshop elements) and have been trying to access my RAW files using the Adobe Camera RAW plugin in Photoshop. The RAW files open OK but it would appear that modifications made to the file in NC are not recognised by Photoshop.

The RAW file appears in the preview window just as it was shot by the camera with none of the changes I have previously made in NC. I am sure it is just a simple setting somewhere but I am unable to find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Pauld no doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong but as long as you have the Nikon Raw converter file in PS it will over ride Adobe Capture, so you need to move the file.

G'day Paul,
Is the issue that you modify the NEF in Nikon Capture, you then save the NEF (still in Nikon Capture) then when you re-open that same modified NEF in PSCS, you mods made in NC aren't recognised and it's opened as though it was unmodified?

Or is it that when you open the modified NEF in PSCS, that you only get the simple RAW interface (ie: the Nikon Capture RAW interface), not the full function PSCS camera raw window?

Just not sure...

Cheers,
Mudder

Thanks oneputt

That seems to have worked, is there anyway for Adobe Camera RAW to open the file with the modifications made in NC as the NEF plugin for PS seems alot slower opening the files.

Andrew

The first problem is exactly what is happening. I moved the NC NEF plugin to the PS plugin file and PS now opens the file with the modifications made in NC, however the NEF plugin is really slow compared to Adobe Camera Raw.

Thanks

Ahh OK...

So opening with the PS camera RAW doesn't appear to recgnise the changes made in NC, but it's sh**loads slower...

I must admit, I just use PSCS for openign RAW's now because NC is so slow in comparison...

Hmmm, I thought that NC would have just written standard stuff to the NEF, but maybe it's writing it in a way that third party s/w doesn't see it?

One of the s/w guru's might know...

Cheers.

You should be saving your files as SAVE AS and leave the raw file unchanged so if you want to reprocess you can without any loss. Just remember to SAVE AS after you have done your work on the raw file you have opened or work on a copy.

As far as Im aware, the way NC saves changes made to the NEF is doesnt alter the original NEF, but to save a list of any changes made. I believe these are appended to the end of the NEF in some way.
Adobe RAW does not understand this methodology and thus, no, A-RAW will not see the changes made to your NEF's in Capture. To get these, you will need to export from Capture to PS in a format such as TIFF.
