Buying from the land of the rising sunMy brother is going to japan soon. How much of a saving do you get purchasing lenses/ nikon equipment from japan?
From what I have heard the prices in Japan are not that great a saving - it would appear that HK could be better.

Actually, most of HK's grey imports come from Japan. But I also hear that Japan's retail prices aren't all too flash hot as Chris mentioned, so I don't know how that works.
You're bound to find the latest released products, and perhaps even some we've never even heard of as there are quite a number of items that are released for Japan's domestic markets only.
You'll see lot of "dummy" stuff at Atkihabara "Electronics Town" and many of beauti young Jap's ladies standing around handing out the marketing and adverstising flyers. Good candid shooting and they're happy to pose for you. Lot of places are selling camera stuffs, but few of them are selling to the foreigners with no sales tax (you have to show them your passport and airline tickets) or otherway of saving by registered a discount card from the stores + buying tax free for travellers. Generally, on the normal stores at the above location or in the Shinjuku precint are not selling cheap, part from those stores it also has number of department stores which you can find some good prices. The last thing, when buying electronic or photography gears, make sure they're with English menu, manuals etc... otherwise you'll be hit with full Japanese language then your trouble of finding translator Birddog114
