There may be some problem with this suggestion, but perhaps readers could give feedback on this idea.

Keeping serial numbers in a secure area is a must with such expensive gear. The hassle of insurance claims even when you know you are going to be recompensed is a trial you want to avoid and serial numbers and other relevant data (such as take a clear photo of all assets prior to overseas trip or just for storage) make the job slightly easier. I know this from having to claim for $8500 worth of gear stolen in PNG.

Anyway suggestion for administrators Birddog and GaryK. What if we kept a central database repository for forum members of serial numbers of cameras and associated gear. An online database entry card could be set up. It looks to me that most D70 users will end up at this forum and if gear is stolen some of our members could be likely purchase candidates. They could easily check the serial number of any offered item to see if it was a members gear and any stolen item could be posted on the forum for members to watch out for.

Most of serial number of the gears recorded on the invoice for warranty, secondly the boxed got it, same the yellow warranty card. Once you take out or add on to your home content insurance policy, they will ask you all the serial numbers and description of related insured item.
To take the photos of all your gears, especially with the serial number is another proof to give to the accessor or insurance company once they required.

I took photos of all my gears + scanned all warranty card and keep it away from my base in digital format.

I like the ideas of setting up a database of member's gears as body and glasses, will help a lot to someone want to check prior to make a purchase, especially on eBay or private sale on the paper.

If you want help to set this up - let me know. I am more than happy to assist you (if you know how to do this already - not sure of your IT/programming skills), or I will be able to create this for you from scratch. If you want me to create this, please let me know all the specs that are required and I will work on it from there.

I am not trying to over-take this or anything like that, but I think the best way to go about this is to get feedback from our members on what the system should/should not contain and then go from there. We can also add to this in the future should this need to be done (if we find that the system out grows the current requirements), but it is obviously better to take some time and work out the requirements and then create the system correctly right from the beginning. I will also maintain the system as well if you would like (again, sorry - but I am not aware of the level of your IT/programming skills).

Let me know your thoughts on this - I am really keen to contribute my skills to the expansion of our little community!

Just a beginner; only been doing A/P work for about 20 years (7 of those in the USofA) and an invited speaker at international conferences in Eu, US and Au for about 10 of those.

In all seriousness, I'm going to see if there's an existing add-on for PHPBB first. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Failing that, creating an add-on seems to me th be the way to go, because it's already handling the major issues of security and satabase access.

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking in terms of a simple table, creating a many-to-one relationship with the users' table here. That table would contain fields for serial no, phpbb user no, descritpion of asset, date acquired, price paid, and current status (owned, stolen, etc),

What have I forgotten?

What other suggestions are forthcoming?
