I go for the Sigma 50-500mm Birddog114

I'd go for the 50-500... also known as the 'bigma' around the place...
that being said ... depends on your type of photography... if you're into wildlife/birds go the bigma... otherwise it's a very expensive 50mm f4 http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.

I don't know these lenses at all, but on the features, I reckon the Optical Stablizer on the 80-400 makes it the winner. I have seen others here very enthused about Nikon VR lenses, and I assume that the Sigma version of VR is pretty good too. The focal length differences - after adjusting for the d70 1.5 muliplier - are 75-750 compared to 120-600. I reckon the shorter end, given that it isn't wide on either lens, is pretty much irrelevant. At the longer end, you are choosing between 150 mm extra telephoto, or OS. The aperture differences are relatively minor. My view, the OS feature wins hands down. No contest. Three cheers for your wife, also Greg - - - - D200 etc

lens decisionYes, I guess my intended use would make things a bit easier. I do a lot of walking around, candid, and street shooting. I also shoot a lot of motorsports. Thanks again gan111111
