Nowaday, I don't see 512Mb CF is fullfill my duty in shooting NEF that what I love to keep as default for my 3 cam bodies, on any assignment I alway load 2Gb card into the slots of each body and just forget about it until the end, and also carry with me another 3 spares of 2Gb in case of.
I think the minimum and standard now is 1.0Gb CF and I did not see any advantage of having Sandisk or Lexar Ultra II instead of Astone 45x CF or Transcend 45x CF, cos the camera and card reader interface has its limitation same as they used the same memory chip inside the device from Samsung. Lexar and Sandisk did not manufacture their memory chip. I used both of above medias in burst mode with my D2h and D70 and the veteran D100 Birddog114

Nick, The best retail price I've seen remains (as Michael mentioned) Vanbar, who'll sell the body + kit lens for $1995. That's a cash price; expect to pay a couple extra % for credit card. With special offers ... cleaning cloth? Worth about $0.20. Who cares? Tripod: If it's not a Manfrotto or better, forget it. Anything less is simply too lightly constructed. Bag: Lowepro is good, but check the size and layout; make sure that you won't grow out of it too quickly. I have three different bags that I'm using, depending upon my needs on a day to day basis. Many here encounter this issue - which bag is right for you may well resolve to three or four different but correct answers. Extra lenses: If they're not Nikon, walk away. Well, perhaps not, but be wary. One other question: regarding the dealers that you've visited, how many of the salespeople that you've spoken with there do you feel actually know and use the camera, and are knowledgeable with respect to its features? Ask them how to set up the SB800 for remote flash use. Ask them to set up FEC .... Be sure to enjoy the puzzled looks on their faces as you do this. g.

While I take your point about the size of the cards, I would still be swapping cards during a critical shoot. I would hate to be using just the one card, and find that due to some technical issue, the images on that one card were not able to be retrieved. Shooting an event across two or three cards gives me that little bit of extra confidence that the day's shoot will be successful. g.

Good point and totally agreed, with single cam.
That why I always shoot with 2 or 3 cams in one assignment, I have two cams shot by myself and the D100 with one of my assistant. If there are important moments, then first the D2h fired, and D70 or D100 second, if it's only by myself. No swapping lens or card cos all three cams have 3 difference lenghts to cover and have no time to eject or reload. I'll do the works at the relaxing moments if needed Birddog114

Good point, and agreed. When I was shooting weddings, I would be shooting with 2 x 35mm bodies on the one rack, attached to a single Metz 60 CT1. He ain't heavy, he's my camera g.

Nick,
To get " blood out of a stone" is what you're looking for getting from retailer today, prices are aggressively and no margin, they throw in some stuffs, make things attractive to the newbie/ buyers and some are not genuine offer, but at the end those things are: - Store or suppliers have overstocking of that items (slow or un-saleable). - they are going to pile up in your cupboard or will be paper weight. - They're unsuable cos won't suit your style. The game is happening in all industries, especially with PC, advertising free of printer/ thousand dollar of free sofware etc.... and it turned out a lemon later. Back to DSLR: - get the D70 with Kit lens 18-70, don't worry about the bag or tripod, no one throw in with the good name Manfrotto tripod and good size of Lowepro bag without an extra premium. You'll find the way for yourself later when you have had a good time with your new toys and you won't regret. Birddog114

Thanks everyone! You guys have really helped me out.
I might check out Vanbar, do they have a store in Sydney? I might also check out Impact Cameras over at Chatswood. That's interesting to note about CF cards Birdog, I might bite the bullet and buy a 1GB card. Bagwise I'm interested in the Lowepro Mini Trekker or a slightly smaller sized satchel styled bag. I would be carrying my gear around most of the day since I walk around the city shooting architecture, skateboarding etc.I already have a cheapie tripod for my Canon A70 so I won't be buying another unless it's a manfrotto or better. gstark: I didn't get the impression from any of the camera stores that they were very knowledgeable. But these were only the larger chain stores eg. Camera House, Paxtons and Fletchers Fotographics. If I was to buy another lens it would definetly be a Nikkor or one of the top Sigmas. I would like to buy from someone who would sell me the kit for a fair price with a card, maybe a few accessories, but really look after me if I had any post-purchase difficulties. Vanbar look quite good, is there an address or phone number I could contact them with? The site seems to lack the information... Thanks, Nick

Heya CV...
becareful with that tripod statement mate! Thats what I used to think! The D70 is much heavier than an A80 and you really notice it on a tripod... I have already forked out for a monopod and am currently (casually) shopping for a new tripod New page

Maybe I phrased that incorrectly. I will definetly be buying a decent tripod in the near future, and if I do use my current tripod, I won't be more then a metre away from it! lol
Nick,
That's what we're about!
I see Birddog's already posted this detail.
Impact Cameras. Hmmm ... that's a rather worriesome name.
All three of which are supposed to be specialist photography stores. While I'm not in any way suprised, I'm really sad that this is the case.
Top Sigmas? Is there such a thing? g.

The big purchase day is tomorrow.
I've settled on the D70+ 18-70 kit lens. A lowepro Nova 2 bag and a 512mb Sandisk Ultra II CF card. Hopefully I can pick these items up for $2200.
Have you spoken to Birddog?

Hi All,
I got mine at Harvey Norman this week. Went to Camera house first - completely un-negotiable there and no extras thrown in. Went to Domayne (so called superstore) and showed them Ted's offer for kit lens, 256mb card and Nikon 70-300 G lens for $2,499. The salesman was rude and inflexible and suggested I go to Teds. The guy at Harvey Norman was much friendlier and after some negotiation got: Camera with kit lens 512 mb ultra cf card Tamron 70-300 for $2,499 Not a stunning deal I know - but at least he negotiated to some extent I could have waited till after Christmas - when these Salesman will be on there knees - but you know how it is John
Congratulations John. Nothing wrong with that deal - price looks OK I have the tamron 70-300 also and I like it. And I do know how it is. I am trying to control myself before buying a SB800 at the moment, and it ain't easy. I have no doubt that you will a. enjoy the camera, and, no matter how hard you try not to, b. buy more stuff. cheers Greg - - - - D200 etc

Hi guys
Well the battery is charging and I'm dieing of anticipation, but enough of that. Picked up the D70 with 18-70 kit lens and 512mb CF card for $2200 at Camera House Castle Hill. Probably not the best deal but my father wanted me to go to a "reputable" store, so that's how it panned out. I also picked up a Lowepro Nova 2 bag and a Hoya UV filter. All and all pretty happy. Now when is the next Sydney meet?
But you went to a Camera house?
December 10 - Christmas dinner ... Did that price include the bag and filter? Congratulations on the new acquisition. Spend a few minutes reading the manual, and then go out and play! g.

I know were I didn't buy mine from today.
Harvey Norman in Rockhampton, Went in Wanted to buy on Finance, they were offering 18mnths interest free. Told them I wanted the d70 kit and a 512 CF card, they said I could also have the lowepro bag and some other stuff and harvey norman extended warranty. The great price was $2960. So I politly told them to stop wasting my time. I'm not total shore how the hole GE finance thing works but they refused to negotiate unless I had cash. Oh well will wait for a trip to Brisbane and try my luck with cash there early in December. MATT
Cheese!!! Matt, are you serious? $2960.00

I repeat: "Twentyand fiftyhundreddollars" for a D70 with kit lens 18-70 + 1Gb 45x Ultra High Performance CF card, and there's many D70Users on this forum got it with happy face. Yes it's Maxwell stock and Maxwell 12 months warranty A Lowepro Nova 2 AW bag is just for 72 bucks. I should move up there and start my biz. Birddog114

VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
It gets better,
After they quoted the $2960 , I said that I did not want extra warrenty so how much was it,$250 so take that off. new price $2710 Ok how much is the 512 card, $229 so take that off new price $2481 Finance costs, 25$ plus $2 per month so take that off($27 for the fist month) new price $2454 My next Question how much D70/lowepro kit $2229 take that off new price $225 So for $225 I had the privilage of talking to the Salesman. His reply Errr... Errrr.. I'll just go talk to my boss. Salesmans final reply , Nope thats what it costs $2960 My reply Goodbye. MATT

Matt I bought my D70 through Birddog and being a cautious person, I spent a lot of time asking him questions and checking him out before making the decision to buy from him. He will happily confirm this if you ask him I have to say, Birddog has been fantastic to me - he is genuine and fair dinkum and you can buy from him with confidence and his support for the D70 forum and its members is just unbelievable. He sets a standard for us to follow. Cheers Graham
Perhaps a meet there in the near future huh? Going down to the open market in winter and have warm sake with coupa grilled salty fish!! Birddog114

Hi Birddog. Yes to Oaska and sake, but we must go to Kyoto as well, as I was ill on weekend I was supposed to go there and missed opportunity. However, met Panasonic GM AV who took me to dinner that night so one door opens when another closes, eh?

Oh yeah! actually we stayed in Kyoto and make few trips by train and bus to Osaka and down to Hiroshima. The hotel we stayed is just in front of Kyoto train station + shopping complex. Just love the fresh and warm sake there. Birddog114

Where did ya get it?G'day all, brand new to this Aussie forum, nice to see some Ozy content, bought my D70 at HN Coffs Hbr 3 weeks ago, didn't have any money but decided to splurge on 12 months int free terms. Paid $2190, got 18-70 kit, 300mm Tamron lens, 1/2 price Cf card and $200 cash back. Not cheap but reasonable.
Just back from Hong Kong and USA, much cheaper but as usual I wasn't prepared to risk the no warranty bit. We are certainly ripped off compared to these countries but that's life. Our retailers live in fairy land. However, I did buy a nice SE T630 mobile in HK for approx $250, not a bad price. Hope to learn some stuff from this forum. P.S. Anyone want to buy a pristine Sony F707 plus all the accessories? Max Young
I was going to get mine through Havey Norman at a good price until after some pushing i found out that it was demo stock and not new. Guess what didn't buy it from Harvey Norman, found it else where for cheaper.
Everything is possible, the impossible just takes longer
Fair enough, I checked that mine was brand new in the box, have found it to be a wonderful camera, plus there is just so much info on the web, got some programme settings into it and off we have gone!
Max
We have a digital photo club at work and get a discount from Harvey Normans (their insurance centre). As we have a club, and most of us are tehcnically minded anyway, Harvey Norman is a good spot to shop if you know what you want. I would not go their if you want advice.
I rang and they had the D70 with kit lens in stock, I went there, paid for it and left. I am sur the prson who sold it to me had no idea what was in the box. It cost $1910 (which when I bought it in November wasn't a bad price) plus I get the rebate back as well. I was fortunate enough to have found this forum so I already had all the information I needed on lenses etc, which made it much easier. I thought about waiting a bit for prices to drop ,or to order through Birddog, but I needed the camera for my father's 60th so it was the best I could do at the time. I plan for future purchasers to be either through Birddog or Vanbar in Melbourne (tripod hunting this weekend).
