Hi All well was out for a drive saturday to see if anyone was surfing to see how the 80-400VR with the Kenko 1.4x would do as where they surf dow here is a bloody long way off shore,anyhow there was none so took a few pics along the coast here with same lens combo.






All images hand held and wasnt the best of days but well wasn't a bad drive.

hi John. Nice bit of reach you've got there, however I wouldn't like to surf there, besides not knowing how to surf it looks a little bit dangerous.

Alex i had to look at the cd as i deleted the image from PC but was taken at 560mm at 1/400sec.

Owen the surfers surf a bit further around from this spots and they have to walk out about a 1,000 yards or so across a reef, it is just one of the spots, but none was there when we was there.

John, where is the rock at? Gt Ocean Rd or nearer to Mt Gambier? I have been to MTG but only to the city itself, not south to the coast, which incidentally I believe has very good cray fishing?

Leek, the 1st pic is jpg of orig as i shoot in RAW mode so no cropping at all, i took quiet a few shots of this as well.

Max yes this is only 20 mins south east on town here to PT Macdonnell it is nice along there and i have taken a few good shot like when the sea is really pushing and the sea spray makes good shots off the rocks. So much so that the local District Council here as asked to have use of 1 of my photos and will be used for promotional purpose, like Banners, Fridge Magnets, Posters etc.. I have agreed to this and will recieve all content where pics used other than the big posters they are going make and invite to the launch etc.. I have 4 of my photos in the local rag today for motorsports here in the south east.
So name is getting around and now and then like the council a freebie for them.

Oh yeh Max your pics inspired me to try get some surf pics, but since they are so far out i need some reach.

The pics look fine to me for sharpness, John. They're gonna be a little soft, being hand held at that focal length, but they don't look bad at all. I like that first shot too. Pretty cool shot.

Wow, 560mm hand-held! The shots look amazingly sharp for that focal length, that 80-400VR really does the job huh... You must also have really good steady hands

How much impact does the Kenko have on the shutter times? Not sure if I'm asking the right question but I find myself sometimes wanting more reach so curious as to the amount of light loss (stops?) from the TC.

Also, can you still use the hood on the 80-400 or on the TC?

Andrew, The vr works well and yes had the hood on and i was surprised that the kenko worked very well with this lens, you do loose a stop but that doesn't matter i think. Handheld i can hold still for a lil bit, well i try but yes i am happy with this. It does not work well on the Sigma 70-200 but not that i mind it works well on it's own and well i wanted it mainly for 80-400. I will try it out on a few bike pics tomorrow if it's not too wet as there is 1 corner i want to try it on and i am in race line if they loose it so the reach will be handy i can stand behind the tire wall.

Just another peice of equipment that can be handy to have.

John, I will be down in MTG I think in August, will have to get down to the beach and see some of the sights (there is obviuosly more to MTG than the blue lake!) Hopefully the temp will be somewhere above freezing point!
