How do you purchase merchandise

Postby jaelkay on Sat May 28, 2005 10:29 pm

I've emailed Gary on 2 separate occasions now regarding buying some pec pads and a rocket blower.

Don't know whether they are getting through or what, but no response as yet.

Do I need to hold my mouth in a particular fashion, chant a mantra, or something.

d70gear@d70users.com is the appropriate email address. Gary doesn't actually handle this, Birddog114 does.

Jaelkay, we are a very friendly group but in order to get something, you have to give something, for example, participating in the discussions here. I couldn't help but notice that you have been a member for over 6 months but have never ever made a post, except to complain that Gary isn't giving you his full and undivided attention...

If you wish to avail yourself of the purchasing benefits available you have to fulfill certain criteria.

1. A minimum of 30 constructive posts - emphasis on constructive.

2. Post an image for review. It doesn't have to be taken with a D70 if you don't own one, any camera will do.

3. Make a request to the moderators to check that you have performed 1 & 2, so that they can grant you member status.

But anyway, a belated welcome to the forum. :)

Actually John... as far as I remember, he doesn't have to be granted member status to get the D70Users.com merchandise... great stuff like the shirt or the hand grip or even the neck strap...

But for items like the rocket blower and pec pads... now John's right.

Jaelkay, those items are something that Birddog deals in and d70gear isn't the right email for this.

Moreso, the prices that Birddog offers on items like this and the lenses and whatnot are offered to those who do pretty much what Johndec has suggested... you know, posting messages, an image or two, turning up to an event... the sort of thing that makes you (and us) feel like you're part of a community.

Messaging an admin over wanting to purchase products from Birddog will probably get you nowhere, not only because we don't handle that, but because in the time you were doing it, you've had 0 posts to your name.

Sorry folks.

I didn't realise that the committee mindset ran the purchase options.

It will take me a month of sundays to post 30 posts, so I guess if I want the products now, I will have to look elsewhere for a supplier.

Just thought you might have appreciated getting my money, instead of my giving it to some other trader.

It's not about the "committee mindset" running the purchases here, jaelkay.

Birddog is so incredibly generous with his time and prices that he gives us and we feel it's kind of our obligation, as well as privilege, to make sure that members don't take advantage of his generosity.

The 30-post minimum is just part of that.

Regardless, you've been here for how long... since November last year? And yet you haven't gotten your posts anywhere near up.

Granted, I don't know your internet situation, but it seems to me that you've had plenty of time to help get that post count up before we grant you that level of access.

I have seen no emails, nor any PMs from you.

When did you send them, and by what means? To which user ID? Other people here email and PM me on a daily basis, and they don't seem to have any issues at all; that is strongly suggestive of user error ID-Ten-T.

As to your attitude, it's really very poor. Please read very carefully the responses that others have posted here, and absorb what they have said, taking into consideration that this board is intended as a fun place, but remains a private board, operated entirely at my pleasure.

Understand too that we do not tolerate flaming of any kind, and I do consider your comments to be quite inflammatory; please bear this in mind when you make any further postings here.

To that end, your abrasive comments about some sort of committee mindset could not be further from the truth. There is NO committee. None.

For the stuff that you wish to purchase ... perhaps again there is an element of user error here: the instructions for making purchases here are fully detailed in this thread and this thread and this thread and, of course, this thread, but I guess that you're too important, too busy, or just too damn lazy to have bothered, after six months of membership and absolutely no activity whatsoever, to have looked them up?

If other members are able to find those resources, maybe it's time to query yourself about how it was that they remained invisible to you? I think in each and avery case they're sticky or an annoucement, which means that they're the first messages you see in the sections within which those messages are placed.

Now, you need to note and understand that nobody here makes any money from the sale of those goods; they're made available - at cost - to our members through the goodness of other members here, and your remark that "you might have appreciated getting my money, instead of my giving it to some other trader. " are about as far off the mark as was your "committee mindset" shot.

We don't care about making money here; we're a community - and a bloody vibrant one at that. Your contributions thus far have been less than exemplary however, and display nothing of the community attitude that most members here seem to enjoy and engender.

Now, if you're concerned that it'll take you a month of Sundays to get to 30 posts, again, I'd respectfully suggest that you look inwards to understand precisely whose responsibility that might be. Everyone elese here seems to understand the reasoning behind why that's been done, and as a person who posts here daily, I can tell you that achieving 30 meaningful and community minded posts isn't a chore; it's a pleasure.

Unless of course you choose to make it otherwise.

Inflammatory comments. You're kidding, right?

FYI, I posted the first email to you on 13.05.2005 at 1918 and the second on 27.05.2005 at 2125. Both messages went through my Netspace account perfectly well.

If you're going to be so precious about a couple of innocuous statements I made, then you can remove my details from your membership listing. OK?

There are enough rules in the world without having to worry about this pedantic nonsense.

The rate at which you are bitching and carrying on you will have 30 posts in no time.

Posting some photos could prove more challenging.

There is a new medical procedure which I believe you could benefit from. Its called an optorectomy. All they do is cut a redundant nerve connection between your eyes and rectum and correct your sh!tty outlook on life.

Maybe you could post pics of your operation?

I take extreme exception to the vitriol which has been pointed at me since my original, meant to be humourous, post.

I wouldn't expect any of you who have been slinging mud my way, will, in any way, be chastised for your behaviour.

I have no shitty outlook on life whatsoever. I have attacked no-one. 'Tis you lot baying after my blood.

It appears flames from your end are acceptable.

While I'd normally love to encourage crap like this, I have to be the responsible admin and tell everyone here just to clam down.

And also to calm down.

Jaelkay, you're free to leave here if you want to. It's your choice.

While I don't support everything my Dad says, it's always possible for emails you've sent us to be bounced or not correctly sent, and even if we had gotten them, it's entirely his prerogative to respond to the said messages.

Regardless, even if these argumentative statements continued to raise your posting count abouve 30, we're still required to approve the people entering the group that has access and I wouldn't allow someone entry based solely on argumentative posts.

That said, I'm sure if you stay here and actually join in on the community you'll find that getting up to that 30 post mark is relatively easy, informative and fun.

You are free to take your money and give it to another supplier.

Completely free.

Birddog's bargains, supplies, and other things that he does for the forum aren't part of your membership rights, but are rather something you earn from participating here.

If you don't particularly like that then, as you said, you can give your money to some other trader.

However, in your time since joining here, have you lurked the forums? Have you read what people have had to say? Was there a time -- any time -- where you actually wanted to comment on someone elses work, a comment they made, a technique, a question you wanted answered... or anything else that would have brought you into our community for any other reason than to buy things?

If the answer is no then, by all means, please do leave.

This is a community, not a one-stop shopping mart.

Sincere apologies Jaelkay and to anyone else I offended.

I didn't mean to be a an ar$ehole. I know it was a cheap shot, but I suffer from tourettes.

Seriously, i think we all got started off on the wrong foot. Why don't we all get along.

Jaekay, the people on this forum are great and the small investment I have made by contributing my images for critique and comments (often unwanted) has been returned many times over through invaluable advice and the feeling of belonging to one of if not the best online communities.

Just give it a genuine go and I am sure you will not be disappointed.

JK, I agree, don't go away, give it a go instead.

I'm new to photography and new to this forum as well, but I've learnt so much from the people on this forum. It really is a first class forum.

I myself am a lightweight contributor, more from lack of knowledge than anything else. I've contributed a couple of images for comment so far and was really pleased with the feedback I've received.

Once I get to know a bit more, I feel I'll be in a better situation to provide useful comment as well as just ask for assistance.

JK, hope to see you posting again soon.

Cheers
John

Thank you for the apology which is graciously accepted.

I too apologise to any who were obviously upset by my original post. I reiterate. It was meant to be humorous. At no time did I intend criticism of Gary, nor of the group.

John,

Your first two messages in this thread showed little, if any, signs of humour. That's what the emoticons are for. I would respectfully suggest that you use them to help others more readily understand your messages. :)

I've just checked the mail server logs, and I can see that your most recent message - the one from May 27 - did come through the server, and was correctly addressed and accepted.

I cannot recall seeing it, and I can only surmise that I would have inadvertantly treated it as spam and discarded it. For this, I sincerely apologise.

I note and accept your apology. Let's now move forward, noting that the rules are here to help engender a sense of community. Whether you wish to become a part of this community is entirely your own choice, but you cannot expect to reap the benefits of membership of this community (such as purchasing product and saving perhaps 50% of the cost) unless you make the effort to be an active member of this community.

That's how it is; tke it, or leave it.
