Ouch! Purple Fringing...

Here is a pic I took on the Gold Coast on Friday. I was deliberately looking for a figure in silhouette against the bright ocean. The lens was the 70-200 VR. I was happy with the shot as I took it, but less so when I downloaded from the card.
Check out the purple fringing in the highlights on the water:

Image

The only way I thought I could save the image was to convert it to B&W, but I feel it loses its impact. What do you think?:

Cricketfan, I thought I read somewhere that newer firmwares fix the purple tinging. I remember seeing one released in Jan (I think 1.03 or 1.04, iirc) that mentioned in the firmware notes that it fixed this I think. So if you update to the latest firmware (2.0) then you should be right. If you've already updated to the latest, then I'm at a loss as to why :)

Thanks kipper. I have updated to Ver 2.0 already. I've never had a PF problem before - I guess it's just the circumstances of the lighting at the time making the shot too difficult.

I'm thinking that it's chromatic aberration and firmware will have nothing to do with it.

Great image though. I think I actually prefer the black and white.
People put way too much rubbish in signature blocks.

I like the colour - and it is most certainly the lighting conditions causing the CA

I like the B&W version anyway :) Perhaps a little hue of blue to give it back a bit of colour. Anyway, i like it.

Whiz, yeah you're probably right but just thought I'd check to see what firmware he's using. Like what you said, it's a CA.

It's a cool image, Trevor. You can fix the CA or use sepia (or or ther color) toning to fix it the way you might want.

I didn't get all of the CA out, but I only spent a minute on it.

I appreciate all the comments, guys.

Thanx for the info bp.

Thanx Kerry for posting your reworked images. I think the sepia looks better than the B&W I did before.

What did you do to the colour image? I guess you added a colour tint?

If you're using PS, maybe the lens adjustments in camera raw (using the "lens" tab) might help? Just a thought.

I used the CA tool in PSP 9, which basically does a color/hue selection, based on sampled areas that you want changed. You select the purple colors which are then desaturated throughout the image. I didn't adjust the desaturated areas in this sample, but you can go in and adjust the tint to more represent the tone surrounding the areas.

You can do the same thing in PS, I think, by manually selecting just that color, but I don't know how to do that.... :(

You just need to get a decent lens cricket, the Tamron 70-300 is pretty good. Or the Sigma maybe

I've got it! Sorry about my failing memory, it's an age thing!

I was just posting about the use of filters in another thread and realised - I had a CPF on my 70-200 VR lens to reduce reflections.

The CA will be from the filter for sure - I obviously didn't have it rotated to the most effective position.

I don't have to buy a Sigma or Tamron after all :!:
