Hi Scott,
I like #1 better, as the road is visable right as far as you can see...and the photo leads into the road through the arch..just my opinion tho . Geoff
Special Moments Photography Nikon D700, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, 70-200 2.8VR, SB800 & some simple studio stuff.
When I first looked at these two it was the second one by a country mile... But then the more I looked at #1 the more I liked it... until I was really confused which one I liked more... I like the strong diagonal composition of #2 (the gutter ending in the corner and the wall coming out on a diagonal leading to the arch) but then yes.... The symetry of #1 started to apeal...

Scott, in which case you would really love item number three, the as-yet untaken view from about two feet further to to the right from where image #2 was shot. It would also have the gutter on the RH side going into the corner, but it shoulkd also include the road wandering off into the distance ...

The first one is my preference. I think the strong leading lines draw you into the shot, whereas on the second one the lines break the image up a trifle too much - especially the suspension wires in top left and right middle of the image. Peter

Definitely the first one for me, but Im a sucker for vanishing-point pics
I do agree with Gary that a step into the road and still using that kerb would have been great too. Smile; it makes people wonder what you have been up to.
Excuse me for being pedantic, but aren't they both the same bridge???
I prefer photo #1 - just due to the daring of standing in the middle of the road to take a photo Cheers, John
