Just got a 600MM lens with a 2x TC and sit 500m from the game and take photos.

Man I don't even know where to start! :evil:

Was taking photos of my girlfriend and her classmates for her group assignment today at Tafe (which I will not mention which one). Wasn't having a great time as I kept getting the settings wrong but finally worked it out to get some decent photos. Then next thing I know, some security schmuck questions us about what we were doing. Obviously we were there drinking coffee and discussing world politics :roll:

I calmly and nicely explained that it was for their assignment, which of course he didn't believe. He put a stop to it saying that the level/section we were on was the executive section of the Tafe and that only "executive" people were allowed to be in it. Also no photography was allowed there unless authorised. I thought fair enough but this is absolute BS at the same time. I asked him if it was in writing which he then said no. Then he adds that it would be ok if we managed to get clearance from the tutor who set the project, but he wasn't available.

At this point I wasn't a happy chappy and had to bite my tongue before saying something that I would regret later on.

In short, we moved to a different spot...same building, different level which had much better lighting and I managed to take some fairly nice photos

I guess it was a bit of a blessing in disguise, but it was a bloody annoying way of getting it

On the flip side, recently the NYC photography ban on subways was officially lifted and police and MTA told not to enforce it

However, I recently experienced having a camera (albeit a mini PHD cam) being pointed in my direction during in a subway which made me uneasy - even taking into account I do it to others being behind the lense most of the time, and knowing that the person was not breaking the law doing so. All I could do was casually scratch my head with my middle finger in the direction of the camera.

Moral of the story - if you wanna capture candids, either do it discretely or do it quickly and move on. Don't have the lens pointing at your subject for a long time as you compose/review and chimp cos it makes people nervous.

One day we will use hidden camera with powerful zoom and forget the rest. :lol:

I don't know how all we, the photogs by trade or hobbyist enjoy the way we are doing, so many BS around, especially with those security guys, I have never been approached by any real COP to ask me to put down or refraining to use my camera, I attended few events and shot COP, politician, the highest politician I shot was the PM, the Opposition leader, Philip Ruddoch, The lady Governor of NSW and many more, especially, PM and Philip Ruddoch always posed for me to take their photos.

The last few year back, I had an opportunity to tag along with AAP and one of my old friends from The White House Press Corp. got many photos of Bill Clinton and his wife on touring Australia at the Rocks and other avenues in Sydney. You may not know how tough the Secret Service Agents treated the photogs with PRESS Pass to get into these events, I experienced those and some were very painful. We always got checked, searched and briefed from them prior to allow to get into the Press area, of course with the minimum distance prohibited and enforced in between us and the President.
