RIP My D70 (22/03/04 - 27/05/05), now I shoot Canon.

So it is unrepairable???

What I think is: he's still in the US and waiting for coming back to Australia to send it in for repair under non warranty, right now his D70 is dead as he mentioned and he doesn't know what the damages are?

Yep I'm waiting till I return to Aust to see what the damage is, and consider whether it's economically feasible to fix. I suspect it may not be, hence its early grave... I may strip the thing apart and learn from it.

Kipper - put simply, I experienced shutter failure.

Dr Birddog - you may examine and consult with orthopaedic peers, alto there's nothing much to see. It simply "Err" instead of raising the mirror when the shutter release is hit.

How many shutter releases did you get out of it? Man that really sucks. Hopefully it will be fixed no problem.

Be interested to know how many shutter releases. I was actually thinking the other day when walking to the bank and thinking about the D2X, and the number of shutter releases I've done on my D70. As mine must be close to 20k. What got me thinking is the firmware doesn't remove the number of shots taken afaik. What if, Nikon are doing like the printer companies with print cartridges and ending the product prematurely via software. With this so called shutter failure, has anybody seen any physical damage associated with the shutter release mechanism?

It certainly may not be intentional though... perhaps the shutter just wasn't tested thoroughly enough and only now they're seeing a fault with it?
