My curiosity got the better of me, I decided to get my casio out of mothballs.
What I said before wasn't quite right. The double exposure works by splitting the LCD (and I presume the sensor) down the middle so you first take the left hand side photo and then the right and the photo is joined together by the camera so if you don't move the camera between exposures the background stays the same.
I had confused another feature of that camera which is what they call a preshot. This is where you take a photo but it only gets recorded on the lcd as a ghost image, you then give the camera to someone else to take the photo of you and tell them to line up the background image that way you are sure of getting the composition you want.
Not bad for a camera the size of a credit card.

the CP5400 has a similiar feature... it ghosts the last image to assist in panorama creation
