Nikon + Canon = Play Nicely

Postby Aussie Dave on Thu Jun 23, 2005 2:41 pm

I would just like to say that I think it is a wonderful idea bringing in new forums such as the "Canon Corral" to the mix and I'm looking forward to seeing some great photos and reading some great posts.

What I hope does not happen is that this site turns into a clone of dpreview where everyone is superior to one another, depending on what camera brand you shoot with.

We all know, regardless of brand bias, that the photographer is the biggest single influence in making a good shot become fantastic - I can only sit back and hope that any pi$$ing competitions are very quickly extinguished...and STRONGLY discouraged.

There is nothing wrong with polite and meaningful discussion over certain issues which are bound to arise, but blatant and flippant mistruths, common at other forums, are really not called for.

I therefore welcome all Canon users to participate in this absolutely wonderful community of photographers, which up until now have mainly been shooting with the D70.

Please let's not spoil what everyone has made so special....

Dave

Well said, Dave.

Let me just say that as an Admin and a Moderator, I won't let it get to that point. I know that Dad (gstark) and I have similar mindsets (not only on this, but on other things... it's scary), as well as the other Moderators.

There are great people around this forum who aren't in a senior status or in a Moderating position who will no doubt let us know when they think someone is going too far, too.

That said, the playful pissing contest between us all is usually all right. We have some fun, you know, it's fine.

But as you say, if people abuse that then this will turn into another DPReview.

Luckilly people, we ain't going to have that happen. :)

Well, Canon user was with us since the start, I don't see there's anything which we have to say or distiguish in between Canon or Nikon user on this board, each one has difference tatse, both sides have nice pics to showing off to their fellows and it's the main aim for this friendly forum.

Well said Dave,

I must admit I've always wondered about the brand snobbery seen on other forums, this is one place that's always had the focus on sharing knowledge and advice in a fun, friendly way. It's just fun taking and sharing images :)

Cheers.

If everybody is superior to everybody else, then even the inferior everybodies will be superior to themselves, possibly creating a troubling tear in the space time continuum, and a pesky endless loop.

Thank goodness for Zenith.

I'd just like to add to this by saying that Canon people can't help it that they didn't know about Nikon being better before they bought their gear or SIgma people not being able to afford good quality Nikon glass.

Like others in the wider community we have a responsible role to play in making them feel welcome since some day they'll get it right

Dave,

Your sentiments are well put.

In case you weren't aware of this, we'll shortly be undergoing a change of name to DSLRUsers.com; we've had the name in place for several months already, and today I felt that, with us starting to get a small mass of Canon users on board, it was appropriate to to open up the new section. As Leigh has indicated, as we get more Pentax/Olympus/Minolta users on board, they too will get their own sandpits.

If I'm really feeling generous, I may even create a Sigma sandpit too. :)

But as you've noticed, we are not about pissing contests here. A bit of poking fun is entirely acceptable, and while I'm certainly a fully paid up Nikaholic, I'm also the first person to recognise that the camera (and the Coke bottle mounted out the front) is but a tool that helps us in the photographic process, and it's the person behind the camera that makes the image.

We have a great team of mods here, and I think it's fair to say that we're all of the same mind, and we are simply not interested at all in letting things here degenerate in the way that some threads do in other arenas; rest assured that that will not happen.

The bottom line here is that we're about photography.

Gary, will the forums get a clean up to go along with DSLRusers?

There are already, IMO, too many forums on the front page, many of which contain a small number of posts. And with a few more it'll only be worse.

I think:
Shooting and meeting ideas and Shooting Assignments could be amalgamated. Most meetings are organised in their respective cities / states forum anyway now.

Meeting reports could be removed - these are generally just posted in the city specific forums.

Merchandise could go into bargains.

Tips and Tricks, and Important links could be merged, maybe even Tutorials.

POTW could be a subforum of Image Reviews (if that is possible with this board software).

Just a few thoughts.

Gary,

I'm sure that you plan a wider revamp of the forum sections once we go cross platform, but while you are at it, can we have a specific section for post-processing and / or Photoshop... Many of the tips / techniques relate to PP / PS and would apply cross camera platform...

Just a thought...

I don't disagree; the question is what goes, and what stays. For others here, I am always open to suggestions ....

I think:

While I have no major problems with the first two of these, the merchandise and bargains sections are kept separate, and will probably remain so, for very good reasons: the serve different purposes.

Merchandise is for the stuff we bring in for our members - polo shirts, wrist and neck straps, sensor cleaning aids. As a guide, we consider these to be important to be made available to all of our members, regardless of their membership status.

By way of contrast, the Bargains section has changed slightly from what I originally intended, but for the better. My original intention was for us to post those special finds that we might see in our day-to-day travels.

What it now holds are (also) the bargains that we're able to secure for our members, those being the ones who are forming the community that we have here. Because of that underlying requirement for the Bargains section (and several others) and its contention with how we percieve the merchandise section, I don't see those two sections being combined.

Tips and Tricks, and Important links could be merged, maybe even Tutorials.

The first two, perhaps, the latter, no. I understand why you're making this suggestion, but I would like to expand the tutorials that we have and have them help make this an even better resource than it already is.

Perhaps a couple of our Canon users could offer some of their expertise here in developing a couple of Canon specific papers that we can host, similar to, for instance, our White Balance paper which is D70 specific.

POTW could be a subforum of Image Reviews (if that is possible with this board software).

Just a few thoughts.

And very welcome thoughts too; thanx muchly.

The board software doesn't support subforums (to my knowledge) and I'd like the PotW to be a high focus item; I think it's both popular and important, and wouldn't like to see it "downgraded" in any way, not that you're suggesting this.

John,

A photoshop/PP section I think, a good idea, and one I was toying with earlier in the week.

Great to read everyone's replies & thank you Gary, not only for such a tremendous place to gain knowledge, but also for helping to bring like-minded people together to form something amazing.

I was aware that D70Users will be metamorphasizing into dSLRUsers and I have absolutely no problems with this at all. The more the merrier I say.

My only concern, which has now diminished, was that I didn't want to see this forum go the way so many others have. Reading everyone's replies, I can see that this will not be an option.

Keep up the good work everyone & long live dSLRUsers :D

Sorry but I am very saddened this was a great NIKON site for NIKON users a fantastic site where you didn’t have to sift through trash to find to find people or the same kind. It seems we have our first my dick is bigger than yours post. I have only been a member for a short time in which I have looked forward to my daily fix it feels like I know everyone here . Is this a taste of the future . ? D70USER RIP . Gary I know this is your site and you must feel it needs to take a different direction for some reason not known to me. I remember the day a Vintage VW joined our Vintage Porsche club both had four air cooled cylinders and two doors 12 months later all the Porsche members started the Classic Porsche Club and we lived happily ever after .Oil and water do not mix!!!

I would have thought that Nikon backwards would spell NOKIN and Canon backwards spells NONAC.

So, it would seem, that if you have a Nikon then kin could be a problem and if you have a Canon then nac would be the problem - as Benny Hill would say - think about it

Laurie,

Why do you think that's going to change?

Why do you feel that we cannot also be a great Canon site?

Don't wory about the pissing contests - we simply will not let them happen; that is simply not what we're about.

It really doesn't matter what tool you use to make your image, what matters is your willingness to share your images and how you did it.

I don't believe this will change with the addition of other photo nuts    I just see more opportunity to leach ideas    and hopefully improve my photography. :P :P :P :P :P

Cheers,
Terry
