Steel SpiderThis is a black & white treatment of a shot of Brisbane's Goodwill Bridge. I'd be interested in any comments, criticisms or advice. Original shot: D70, Kit Lens, 18mm, 1/800@f14. PP included b&w conversion via the Greg Gorman/LAB colour technique, a little sharpening and some diffuse glow.
Click for large version. Simon

Hi Simon
Really nice composition. I'm seeing some jaggies, which I guess would be due to the compression. I'm sure you had your reasons for converting to B&W, but I think this shot would also look great with in colour - blue sky, contrasting structure. TFF (Trevor)

Bobrob - Thanks for your comments.
Trevor - Thanks also. I just did the B&W for what I thought would be a more graphic result. I'm in two minds myself as to which looks better. Here's the colour version for comparison: Opinions? Click = Big Simon

Yeah, I see what you mean. But I slightly favour the colour version. In any case, nicely composed and framed. TFF (Trevor)

Thanks Trevor. To be honest.. while I was doing the B&W version, something about it reminded me of "The War of the Worlds" - big metal stalking things with long legs! I know, I need my medication.

I really like this shot Simon.... b&w version does it for me...
cheers http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
Hey thanks Mark.
It's a bit out of the box for me; a little more stark and literal than my normal holiday-snap style of photography. I think some of the stuff I see and read in the forum is starting to rub off. Simon

don't start thinking that the puzzle is beginning to take shape ... spoils the challenge http://www.markcrossphotography.com - A camera, glass, and some light.
Trust me Mark - I'm still wandering aimlessly around this maze (but at least I'm enjoying the walk!)

Think I prefer the colour one, it seems to reinforce the sense of looking up the sky through something over me...
Terrific composition, all those lines leading in and the last(?) not quite getting there to hold me in there... Works really well for me... Did look "edgey" though... Aka Andrew
Thanks Andrew. I really appreciate your comments. Sorry about the edges!! I'm not quite sure what happened there - they don't seem as prevalent on my versions. Wouldn't be the first time I've missed something that was obvious to others..

Great shot Manta - and I agree with you about W.O.W. I hope you mean the H.G. Wells version rather than the Tom Cruise version!!! HB
Hi Heath - I'm pleased you like it.
My wife and I scored some Gold Class tickets and are off to see WotW next Saturday - I'll be keen to see how Spielberg handles this classic but I'm not looking forward to having to put up with Tom Cruise for all that time. I believe the ending's been changed - Tom rids the world of the invading 'Martians' by fixing them a piercing glare and telling them to 'put their manners back in'. Simon

Very glad you are a cultured man. Loved the audio version of WOW, listened to it thtough my childhood. Hoping that Spielburg kills off Cruise in the first 5 minutes before the martians even arrive. Hopefully in a car accident, or something as mundane as possible (choking on breakfast etc).
Man I am harsh sometimes - but fair. HB
