Workflow with .NEF files

Workflow with .NEF files

Postby Geoff M on Sat Jun 25, 2005 9:12 pm

Help................!! Prior to purchasing my D70s a week ago, I always used JPEG files which were not a problem for me in storing (Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0) and editing (Adobe Photshop Elements 2.0).

Neither of these two pieces of software seem to recognise the .NEF file format. I am therefore having to resort to importing from the CF card into Picture Project, with limited manipulation in comparison to Elements, and then saving as a JPEG to the hard drive and then importing the file into Photoshop Album. This is a bit long winded and a little frustrating.

Can Photoshop Elements or Album v2.0 recognise .NEF files? There must be a easier and more efficent method of workflow.

P.S. I have also downloaded a trial version of Elements 3.0 from the adobe website which also does not seem to recognise .NEF files. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Geoff

In a word NO. These 2 programs do not open .NEF files and yes using Elements 3 should make your life easier

Elements 3 does work with RAW files but I am not sure if you have to download the plugin for E/3 as you had to using PSCS but this info should be on the downloads page of Adobe

hope this helps
bp PS i will have a look at the Adobe site

Hi Geoff
You can open NEF files with PSE2 - I used to do it prior to updating to PSE3.
You need the Adobe Camera RAW 2 plugin.
You should find it with a Google search. I don't think it is on the Adobe Support site now.

G'day,

Can't Nikon View work with NEF files? Can't remember trying without capture and PSCS installed so not sure of what Nikon view can do on it's own...

Cheers.

Hi Geoff

I have found RawShooter Essentials to be quite good (and quick) at working with NEF files. It is free, so maybe it is worth trying it to see what you think. You can download via <a href="http://www.download.com/RawShooter-Essentials-2005/3000-2204_4-10399351.html?tag=lst-0-1">Download.Com</a>. Let me know what your thoughts are. If you need help setting up your processing parameters, just let me know.

Also, I think that Nikon View is superior to Picture Project. You can download Nikon View from the <a href="http://nikonasia-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nikonasia_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=MOjsDzFh&p_lva=507&p_li=&p_page=1&p_prod_lvl1=40&p_prod_lvl2=48&p_cat_lvl1=11&p_search_text=&p_new_search=1&p_search_type=7&p_sort_by=dflt">Nikon Software Website</a>.

Hi bp

Thanks for the info. I have downloaded the Raw 3.1 convertor but still does not want to open a .NEF file. I need to investigate a bit further!

ACR 3.1 will only work with Photoshop CS2... You probably need to download an older 2.x version of Camera Raw... It should still be available somewhere...

from the Adobe site:

The Camera Raw 3.1 plug-in is not compatible with versions of Photoshop earlier than Photoshop CS2 or versions of Photoshop Elements earlier than Photoshop Elements 3.0.

To install:

Exit Photoshop Elements.
Open the Finder.
Navigate to Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 3/Plug-Ins/File Formats.
Move the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert.
Copy the new Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download into the same folder as in Step 3.
Launch Photoshop Elements.

These instructions are for "Mac" but there are instructions for PC as well. Raw 3.1 will work in Elements 3

hope this helps
bp PS more info on your system would help ?

Hi Kristine
Thanks for the links, I have downloaded both Nikon View and Raw shooter essentials, just need to find the time to browse and evaluate the software.
