Have you formatted the CF disk in the camera or on the card reader?

I used PC Inspector, http://www.pcinspector.de/ , there are many others, I believe Sandisk also have a free one, don't give up and don't reuse the card. Good luck
No, the card can be re-format and re-use, not surprised me at all, these things happened with me at least two times in the past 4 years with DSLR on difference CF cards, make sure you have few spares and test them during the shooting that why I have the Epson P-2000 and just want to use it to check all transfer photos are right, if not then I know something wrong and not using that CF card until I'm back to base, doing the recovery and re-format and re-use the card. Without the LCD on the PSD, I don't know anything until later of the day, and it's too late. If the card has been formatted and re-use, recovery software still can recover the missing but will take too long to recover all, few hours or half a day, depend on how many time did you format and re-use it. Catcha, just to be clear on my and Birddy's comments, if you are going to try to recover the shots, do not reuse till you do or it will be too time consuming or too hard. If you are prepared to lose those shots reformat now and all should be ok. Reformat in phone.
i'm trying out that recovery site you gave me..it's foud the files and transfering to my comp as i speak now...fingers crossed i let you know how it goes in a few minutes when it's all done

Catcha/Ben,
Were you successful in retrieving all you shots from the track ex SanDisk ULtra II CF card I have seen one shot from the track with two (2) photogs carrying C*n*n equipment, just can't say that word. fozzie
When people ask what equipment I use - I tell them my eyes.
I'm making good use of the Sabbath in front of a computer (full of sarcasm) - may as well be at Birdies, full of lust...
Have all you people heard of many faults in Sandisk Ultra II's? Because that's the brand all my cards and I've never had a problem. Are there any cards that are more reliable? HB
I’ll say it for you Fozzie - Canon Chris

Heath,
I use SanDisk Ultra II 512MB (Ex Organiser World) and Astone 1 & 2GB (Ex Birddog114) and have had no problems with either brands. I think that it is like everything in life: works fine, get something that is just no right or a lemon. fozzie

Yep all good recovered all of them going to go out again and get trigger happy, this time hope i can retain the information of setting for future reference. Ben Yu

Glad it all turned out for you in the end.
I just came from a photography course and the instructor advised everyone there that after downloading their images onto the computer that they should format the CF card. He also said if you simply delete the images without formatting it leaves behind all the, or part of the information about the picture on the card eventually leading to the card not being readable. I dont know if this is the case here but it might be worth doing the above if you dont do so already. Jamie
In the end I use a program called On track easy recovery professional. that did the job the one that was there, kept on freezing up........

Today I took some time to excercise my D70 and took a fair few pictures. Only to discover that when i wanted to DL it again. corrupted File. Is it problem with the camera or with the CF card? i might invest in a second card if this is the case

The Canon owner in me would love to blame the camera, but sounds like the card is dead. Give it a few format cycles but I daresay its not happy. Do you have any other CF devices to try it in? Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes. http://www.dionm.net/
Not really just annoying ..its happend twice. Should of tested it before I went shooting today. Thank goodness for recovery programs Ben Yu

Catcha, 100% there's the card if you are not always to format the card inside the camera before shooting. Deleting files does not grant the good use of card as mentioned in thread or somewhere on this board. Birddog114

And always have two or three cards to shoot with as instead of the solo.

Catcha, when you put the CF card in the camera, make sure you do it FIRMLY, ie: not softly/gently.
I had a similar problem to yours but i found that it had to do with how i inserted the card in the camera. Give it a good push and it should make a better contact. BUT don't push too hard, i'd hate for you to break it. Find a compromise between being too soft or too hard. Good luck. Steve.

Dunno if this means much in your situation. I've had this happen with 3 hi-speed Lexar cards. Two of the cards are trash. The 3rd is still running.
I have one of the original d70s and I think there's a problem with the way it formats/writes to these fast cards. In every problem case, I was using burst mode and had the camera set up to immediately review the shots. I think that when it tries to write to an area of the card that is marginal, it trashes the card lookup tables. A proper format should map out bad sectors, but it apparently doesn't. So, when the card is writing and trying to read at the same time, it goofs the files, giving a CHA error. I've turned of the immediate review of the files and haven't had a problem since. As a test, I pushed the review button while it was writing a NEF file to the card and it trashed the file. Dunno if it will apply to your problem, but might be worth thinking about when using your problem card. My suggestion would be to have the card replaced under warranty. my gallery of so-so photos

The way catcha tried to talk here is he has the Sandisk Ultra II 1Gb card, your 256Mb card perhaps is long out of date with the D70. Members on this board may used them at their first beginning when they have their D70 but after few days, they never use them again or use them as backup or spares. The most used cards which I found are 1Gb, 2Gb, 4Gb now, even with 512Mb, people just keep it in their bag. The 256Mb cards you have are also the old type, not the Ultra II (45x or 60x) not the fast card and you didn't use them on the D70 or DSLR, then they are difference, P&S have difference speed of writing and slowisssst! in comparison with the D70 or any modern DSLR. You may or may not experience with it when you didn't have the DSLR as yet. Thus the D70 is only required card with maximum speed of 45x, any card with other speed (60x, 80x) higher than that won't make big difference in shooting (refer to shooting in RAW), benefits only in card reader or transfering pics from CF card to PC or perhaps storage device. I have most of Nikon DSLRs in my hand and never ever use or have any Lexar or Sandisk in my inventory. The only cards I have and use are the Transcend, second is Astone in 45x and recently upgraded all to 80x. I didn't have any problems at all with them in the last 4 years, started with my D100. Members on this board acquired heaps of Transcend and Astone cards for their D70 but none of many complaints about their performance, same as none of return for warranty. People may happy to spend more monies for the expensive cards with their fancy marketing but do we need them for the D70 or the D2 series? and it's your answer. Birddog114

And you would be wrong. Deleting files will lead to fragmentation of your memory on your CF card. Reformatting clears the memory and leaves everything spick and span. And it's probably quicker to reformat than it is to delete. Also, you will be better off using a CF reader than the USB connector on the camera. It's much quicker - especially if you have USB2 - ad doesn't wear out the battery on the camera. g.
