Talking Heads

Postby MHD on Sun Nov 14, 2004 3:46 pm

Just thought I would use a snappy title!

Well I'v ebeen quite amazed the range and spectrum of ways to keep your gear firm out there... and finally thanks to Birddog and a Mr Poon "Very Special" I have purchased a set of legs...

Now I look at what to top it with... Please add your input to this thread, either your research or practical experience

I Loved the Markins head we played with at the meet, so its 350 odd Euro... pretty pricy and you have to get it from Nikonians...

i'm quite interested in the Really right stuff BH-55 LR (55mm ball head with leaver release plate) but they are sold out and people are saying a 6 week back order... And I'm going to NZ in 5! RRP 455 plate included

I have emailed them....

Link:
http://reallyrightstuff.com/ballheads/index.html

Now I have done some more casual searching and just dug up the Arca-Swiss B1 ball head with a RRP of 399 ex plate, nice price! Anyone used one or know of AS balls?

Oooooh! so much range and with no outlets in Australia no chance to play exept at user meets...

What will you use your tripod predominantly for? What features would you like or anticipate you'll need? Ball heads on pan base are about as good as they get, but they're also top of the price range. If you can do without the panning platform, you'll save yourself a bundle with simpler ball head design (with the obvious disadvantage if you do panorama work). Any and all you listed would do the D70 justice, they're all got the dovetail quick release, so I guess it comes down to price and availability. Whichever one meets your budget and time constraints - delivered to you before you heading off to the land of the sheep, should be the one you give your business to. :)

Yep.. but looking at raw stats on a page is one thing, hearing others thoughts is another...

I want one that cold take d70 + 200-400VR (which is a lens that is at the limit of my buying potential along way down the track, ie when I earn real money!)

I dont want to need to buy one for a while so being able to pan is important as I'm pretty sure I will want to do some NZ Panos..

MHD,
I had an AS Ballhead nearly two years ago, it was an excellent ballhead in the market at that time, it's small than the RRS BH-55 series and the Markin 20, it's similar size to the Markin 10 and the Markin 10 or 20 are now in my favour than the AS B1, therefore I ditched that AS B1 and went for Markin 20.
Here's another offer for you.
My RRS BH55Pro will be here by the end of this month as RRS promised, I loan it to you for your trip to new Zealand and the RRS L bracket which I have as you've seen in last meet.
You can order your RRS or Markin head and return the RRS BH55pro to me once you're back in the country.
With RRS, there's 6 week waiting due to the big demand and Markin 10 or 20 they have stock but did not like their shipping style, so check with fozzie to see how does he go with it?

P.S: If you think about the lens lust then definetely have to think about one head can do for many of your future lenses, The Markin 20 and BH55 series will answer all your needs.

MHD,
You can have the Markin 20 for a "test drive" or the RRS BH55Pro, I don't need two of them in one shooting, just love their products and bought them as ready.

Another job for you: BTW, I'll meet Christiand (he's from Canberra) next Saturday or Sunday, I'll have 16 A3 prints from your winning photo, I need you to autograph them for the Xmas present at Xmas dinner meet to the attended members.
Christiand will bring them to the ANU or you may contact him, so you can have time to put your fancy signature on the prints for the community.

Hmmm... interesting one that one..
My only concern with that one is that it has no "slot" for when shooting portrait...
Price is VERY nice though!!!!

But look at it again, it can swing in portrait and you're going to get the L bracket for D70 so there isn't poblem.
I think Poon is selling them to.
Hang on, will ask and revert

I just heard back from both Acratech and RRS

The backorder on RRS is now 7 weeks!

However Acratech has balls in stock and can ship the next day... Strongly leaning towards the Acratech now... (added advantage of being nearly 200USD cheaper too!)

MHD,
Yes I knew the RRS is quite not adequate with your demand and their waiting time and it's nearly double price of Acratech Ultimate Ballhead, I might swing to it if I don't hear anything from RRS next week as they promised.
Still waiting to hear from Poon about the heads, he was off to Macau in last few days and returned yesterday so let him catch up with his back logs.
I do like the ideas of Acratech Ultimate Ballhead alot with very flexible of swing its ball around with the camera. Another lust perhaps
