Hi people,
Been reading here for a while since I decided to purchase a D70. I didn't end up getting one however as when I started reading about the D50 coming I decided to wait and see how its specs would compare to the D70.
After comparison, the cut down version had everything I was looking for and the missing functions would not hamper my modest talent.
It arrived on Monday so haven't been able to have much of a play with it yet but I love the way it handles. It's nice to be handling an slr again. I've been a fan of digital photgraphy since it became affordable. I love the immediate feedback, no film costs, only printing the "good" shots.
I've also got a Canon A30 and a Nikon Coolpix 5700, and have got some great results from them.
Here are a couple of offerings from the new toy. The early morning shots are a touch soft, forgot the tripod (seniors moment).
Apologies if I've rambled on a bit but I'm looking forward to gaining information and inspiration from the forum and hopefully making useful contributions in return.
Cheers, John

Welcome Jed, hope you like the new toy The first shot is good, but in the third someone has left a nice HSV in the way of your pic of the lookout

I like that third one. You've got a very powerful camera there. I'm impressed with the tonal range you've captured. Digitally, I previously had a 300d because I got a good deal on it -- that seemed to be a very low point in that camera...but with the d70, I feel it's much better. Looks like the d50 is right up there with it.

There is one...but it involves balsa wood and cheap glue.

Welcome Jed. Interesting that your car managed to smeak into every shot For the first one I think it would have been better without the car given the moodiness of the image as a whole. Shows the D50 is not too bad either. What lens were you using?

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I had formed the opinion that this forum was a friendly place from what I'd been reading before joining up.
To answer points raised in your posts -
- the D50 kit lens is the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ed zoom. Would have prefered the D70's larger range kit lens but its a nice start. Being used to the zoom range of the 5700 it will take a little getting used to. I predict the oft mentioned lens lust in my future.
- my clubby is the best model I've ever come across. Takes directions well, doesn't complain about early morning shoots, it's never too hot, cold or whatever, etc. Hey Stubbsy, if you have a look at my website you'll see how sneaky it is.
- a little surprised that I'm the first D50 owner here. Finally a trendsetter
Took some "happy snaps" of the grandkids last night. I've posted a couple of the better ones but the amount of redeye in most of them was disappointing using the camera's flash. Will be breaking out the 80dx and the trusty 25 year old Metz 45ct4 for further experimentation.
I'm finding the handling comfortable and intuitive so all good there.
Cheers, John

G'day John,
Welcome mate, first post and some great shots too! The first couple are really terrific angles and use of soft lighting, very nice, and I can see and understand the car thing too. Great kids too, looks like your new toy's in for a work out...
Cheers.
Aka Andrew
