A hand-held panorama of 10 shots taken with the kit lens at 52mm...

The light was not optimal so I might go back again before it leaves...

If anyone is interested in this sort of STUFF and wants a better quality one for printing, let me know...

I'm having a play with various settings to see if I can improve it... It seems to bulge towards the viewer in the middle...

Great shot John - just one thing it appears to have a bow and stern width of 2 meters and a middle dimension of 3 kilometres

I had to go for a pano as it wouldn't all fit within the 18mm range of the kit-lens... I probably could have done it in less shots in landscape mode, but I wanted to get the level of detail that I now have captured...

When I brought my 80-400VR out I was expecting to be picked up by special forces within seconds...

What my Pano doesn't show is the 20 other (mostly P&S or mobile phone) "photographers" that were behind me that stayed on the footpath and therefore had a fence, several palm trees and LITTLE OLD ME in their photos...

Does anyone have the ability to print from an A3 roll???
I wouldn't mind printing this (or an improved version) at a decent size - I'm more than willing to pay for paper / ink etc...

I'm not sure that the boat/ship should be quite that straight... I think that it has to bend in the middle somewhere, but maybe not quite as violently as my pano did...

I'd still love to know how you did that though...

Prepare yourself at one of the mini meet and use the printer.

Set up some guide lines......... See my post in tips and tricks on setting up templets as you will also need this information, as it is what you do after you have opened your image AND BEFORE you go to edit.......

Templets or NEW PAGES are used a lot in PSCS and PSCS2 when you edit on an image as a lot of edit tools need space to work

Nice shot...anyone know when it's leaving? I can't find any news site that mentions when it's leaving. The Port Authority site doesn't mention it, only cargo and other vessel movements...

Agreed, but I was quite high above the water line, so I'd expect to see some curvature of the water-line... In addition - the middle of the top deck is much closer to me than the hull...
It overhangs quite a bit...

I am therefore finding it a little difficult to adjust the perspective to make it look right... Any suggestions welcome...

sorry bigpix... Yes I had seen the instructions above, but had not acknowledged them...
I even tried it out, but my main difficulty is knowing how much to warp it... Not sure what should be straight and what shouldn't...

you should be setting guide lines so you are working to a straight edge, set your guide lines both vertical and horizontal add 2 or 4 or as many as you need set then equal at both ends so your ajustments are the same both ends......takes out the guess work......

OK... Here's my attempt at removing the perspective distortion using bp's method... I've also left a little bit more of the foreground in (including the tiny dinghy on the left)...

How does this look??? Any better???

Hey John, great pano, did you do this in Win or Mac? If on Mac, which programme did you use? If on Win, do you know of any decent pano stitching apps for OSx?

Windows I'm afraid...

The first one in the thread was done with Autostitch...
The last one was done with Panorama Factory which I have now bought...

A quick google on Panorama Stitch Mac showed evidence of several tools for the Mac, but I wouldn't have a clue which is the best...

Max - I use a mac but have installed Virtual PC 7.0 and run any PC program I like - it’s worth a try

Must be honest Max and say that I have not tried printing as yet. I am on a wireless network and when my work load slows down I will try the print side of Virtual PC. I am using Windows 2000 Pro and it is set up so that I can move between mac and PC effortlessly - I have two monitors which makes it very easy.

Having said all that Chris, my HP920 printer ran out of ink this week and I'm blowed if I'm going to fork out $120 for 2 cartridges so all printing now is on the Epson R210, but I don't know if this is wireless compatible with AE base station. I sort of get lazy being able to print from my desk and not having to cart the laptop into the next room...

I took 10 shots in Portrait orientation slowly moving from left to right, ensuring that the grid markers in the viewfinder stayed level with the deck and that there was at least a 30% overlap between the shots.

All shots were taken handheld with the kit lens at 52mm.

At home, I converted the RAW files to JPG at full size and then stitched the JPGs together using Panorama Factory software.
The software takes care of all the difficult stuff like distortion, exposure matching and blending of the edges...

The final result was a 87Mb TIFF file which is suitable for printing at a size of about 1m x 25cm at 300dpi. On that version, you can see people's faces on the deck and see all the detail of the aircraft on the deck (including the attack helicopters that are covered up with tarpaulin )...

Nice ship. I missed it up at Talisman Sabre. We didn't go within a cooee of it, but i wish we had. It would have made a spectacular sight at sea.

I did get one of USS Boxer though, which looks like an aircraft carrier.

Nice work John. I'd really love to see it after you have printed it.
