A couple of Still life

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Hi guys,

I've been trying my hand at some more still lifes and would appreciate any comments and critique.

In my book all still pics are still lifes 8)

I like them all Matt. Especially the book. What sort of lighting/lens did you use??

Thanks guys.

Robboh, the lighting was a simple table lamp angled to get the shadow.
Taken with the kit lens, f/4.5, 1/80.
Very simple set up because that's all I have to play with at the moment.

The first one is superb.

The second one is interesting - hadn't seen it done before - or else I'm a goldfish :shock: Although I keep trying to read the book.

THird - OOF on the whisk is a shame, but the egg is nice and sharp (or should I say smooth :wink: )

Sunset - not sure why, but I don't like it. Probably it's the very busy top which I'd like to see cropped out a little and maybe the image could be a little darker.

Three out of four ain't bad :lol:

Cheers Peter,

I don't know why I put the sunset in with these. It just doesn't fit at all. In fact I'm going to remove it.

The book one I'm sure I have seen before, it's by no means original, just wanted to experiment with the light and shadow. The book is "The rule of four".

Never had seen the book one before, but I find them all very nice. Is it only me, I find a strong sexual connotation in the third one.

Would you believe that this is the book I am reading at the moment! I recognised the word in italics in your image- "Hypnerotomachia", which is virtually the main theme in the book. :lol:

And I do think it is a good pic.
