Dual monitor setup

Postby Geoff on Wed Jul 13, 2005 3:47 pm

Well after the tax man gave me a nice return this F.Y I went and bought an LCD for myself. I've got it home and I have no idea how to setup dual monitor situation. I only seem to have one plug for the monitor in the back of my PC, what else do I need to get? Doh! :)

Hey! remember not long ago when you bought the CRT, I mentioned you may need the new VGA card for dual monitor later  and now it's the time.
Go get the VGA card with dual output for monitor and it's the only way.

You well need to get another graphics gard, one that supports dual displays, you want at least 64mb of video ram (preferably 128 or 256)... I have dual but you know what they say "once you go dual you never (can) go back"

I went back! I had 2 x 17inch CRT, my neck was hurting from turing left/right. IMHO CRT make for bad dual setup, LCD's with thin frame are a better setup. although a single 21inch widesceen LCD....

Geoff,
Go back to where you bought the LCD, and they may have the graphic card with 128 or 256Mb with dual output, one for DVI and one for analog, I am assuming the LCD monitor has two inputs (DVI & Analog).

P.S: And your existing CRT only has the analog input

Hmm, the one that I have is the LG L1750SQ - it only appears to have one input. It was a great price though :). 8ms :), and yes I read what Leigh said about the minimum refresh rate u can physically go is 16ms, but I like the monitor and I got it for a good price :)

Geoff,

If you have rradon 9800, I would be very suprised if it didnt already support duel screens.

I have a 9600XT that does it .

what you may find though is that there is 2 different type of connections,

1. Standard 15pin VGA
2. White DVI connector.

Note: you can get a DVI-VGA connector , one came with my card

Hopefully your LCD has DVI you can plug it in to it ,then your CRT can plug into the existing 15pin VGA .

Get the latest drivers for the card and go from there.

Do a google search it should give you more indepth info than I can.

If your still confused take apic of the back of the puter box and we will see if it has one

CheersMATT

Doesn't Radeon 9800 have two connectors - one for analog, one for digital? If it's that all you need is an adaptor digital-to-analog. That's it

Yup, what they all said. Best to run your LCD off DVI if you can, but if it can't take DVI then you can use the aforementioned DVI-VGA adapter. I have a spare one if you didn't get one with your card (but you should have, my 9800 Pro came with one).

Sounds like the one I bought recently.

To make your PC drive two monitors your video card needs to have dual outputs. It may have these already, but you might not be recognising the second one.

Locate your video card at the back of your pc. If the video is integrated into your MB, then you're temporarily stuck, but if it's not, see how many multi-pin connectors there are on the back of the card. What you're used to seeing will be the 15 pin mini-D connector, and that's what you're currently connected to.

Is there another connector, (usually) white and rectangular, and about one and a quarter inches long by about three eighths wide? If so, you're almost in luck; that's your DVI connector.

If this is the case, you may have recieved a DVI- VGA converter with the PC (or video card) and all you need to do is use that adapter between your new monitor and the video card.

If not, then you'll need to by a card that supports dual monitors. Fortunately, these are all that not expensive and $50 - $100 should see you on your way.

Depends upon the specific flavour of the card. Some do, some don't.

Ok...thanx guys so far. I'm soo not computer minded anymore, I used to be a bit more savvy but alas..I'm not..ok here's the back of my PC. The dark blue one (A) is where my usual normal CRT monitor goes, and the only other option that COULD be a second monitor input is B...am I way off? :)

OK, so the DVI connector is the one next to it, get the converter and you're on your way.

P.S: DVI-VGA converter is around few bucks.

Yes, second (white) connector is DVI. All you need is DVI-VGA adaptor as mentioned above

Ok,

B seems to be a com port.

A is the video card.

Good news is that the white port next to your blue A si the DVI connector.

So what you need is a DVI- Analouge connector. One will plu into the Blue "A" the other into the WHITE+ Adaptor.

So all seems good you just need the adaptor.

Before you go, make sure the graphic card is not from ASUS, if it's from Asus then beware of difference type of DVI type.

Hi Geoff, good luck with the dual display. Be sure to take a pic of your desktop with the two monitors once you get things working. :)

Is your PC from Aldi? Also you might wanna scratch out your WinXP product key visible in that pic.

I almost ended up buying the same monitor you did, for a friend of mine the other day. But ended up with a Viewsonic at around the same price range $340ish (also an 8ms display, but panel made by Samsung instead of LG-Phillips).

Hi guys,
Thanx MWCB - I ended up not being able to wait and got it from Dickie Smithies! Now I have to get them working together, just plugged in the other monitor via the thingy me bob converter and it don't like it, maybe I need a reboot. :)

Onyx - I got this monitor for $319, I thought that was pretty good. It certainly is VERY crisp! Not sure now which to have as my main monitor the 19" CRT or the 17" LCD :)..hmmm decisions.

Get a photo up and display in both monitors, then you'll see the difference.
I can show you the difference of a photo on my MIT. Diamondtron 22" CRT and a top model of a BenQ or Viewsonic 20" LCD, next time when you're at the mini meet.

What software are you using for the dual monitor setup.. I have Ultramon running, and it's great. I just need another 19 inch lcd.. I currently have a 19 inch, and a 15 inch, so it's kinda weird when I drag my mouse from screen to the other... Still though, I could never go back to one monitor on purpose.

In fact.. at work, I keep wanting to drag windows to the monitor sitting next to mine.. except it's my work collegues monitor.. it don't work :)

It's not free, but it's not too expensive either.. Download the trial once you've become comfortable with your existing setup and then compare.
