Tiger Update 10.4.2 available

For those of you Mac people running OS X Tiger, Apple has the latest updates 10.4.2 available as of today. Free of course.

I've been running Tiger since late in the week it came out, Chris, and have found hardly anything to gripe about and a lot to crow about. Especially the all the cool dictionary functions.

If you set your cursor over any word in any document and press control-command D the full dictionary definition of the word comes up. Type a couple letters in mail or textedit and then press Esc and a full spelling list of letters beginning with those letters comes up and you can select the correct word and spelling that you want. These are just the little bits, the full Dictionary Application is really some thing special, too. And Spotlight really works as a thorough desktop search tool.

Not a revolutionary OS, but and evolutionary OS. A very nice one. Has played nice with every other program except M-Audio's sound card and Vuescan via SCSI but they may have it fixed by now.

Sorry to go slightly OT for a second, but as you are both using macs I was wondering what you're take on the shift to Intel is. Would you hold off buying another or would you wait till the switch?

Chris, I too have been using tiger since he first day... i'm self empoyed designer and rely on my macs to work long days every day without a hitch.. i tried on my pbook first after a week no probs at all.. i upgraded my powermac.. I've had no problems... and the benefts of spotlight are amazing... so much easier to search through 4yrs of jobs for a particular invoice with a particular word on it... the dashboard is a 'nice' feature to have but not really life changing.. but the OS does run faster..

Rokstar, the change to intel doesnt phase me too much.. IBM couldn't produce G5 PowerPC processors to run cool enough for a laptop... but even thought the switch is only a year away they have promised that they will still develop and update OS for at least 5 more years for the IBM chips... I normally replace my system every 18mths and will have no quarms about getting another G5 (currently waiting for the dual 3ghz with dual 1.5G bus)

I've been running 10.4.2 for the last 3 hours with no problems at all - Safari is definately a little quicker and a few issues have been fixed with Mail.

As for the Intel change, I'll be holding on to my Powerbook for as long as possible (probably until it dies), but I think the switch to Intel is a good long term move for Apple; Motorola was obviously not moving fast enough for them on the chip developing front. 2007 will be an exciting year for us Mac zealots!

Chris, my only advise is to backup everything, and do a freah install... dont forget your bookmarks, contacts, mail, and preferences.. it feels a bit wierd at first will everything put when it should be.. but its like a spring clean... If you need any help with it head over to http://www.appletalk.com.au there's pleanty of help over there if you need it... its not that scary... but if you have two macs, try it on one first just to make sure... are you running CS1 or CS2? as some CS1 users did have trouble with the inital install when using Epson printers but this was fixed in the first patch (epson didnt update drivers even thought they had 6mths to get it together).

Max - It goes for US$129, and yes, I'd say spotlight alone is worth it, but there are so many more neat things that really cinch the deal. Just make sure that the drive you install it in has plenty of space for spotlight to do its indexing (8Gb or so. It all depends on how much there is to index, obviously) or you're likely to get "kernel panics" and it won't run until it can get the job done. I kept a copy of OS Panther on another drive just in case and it came in handy until I got that worked out. After that, pure bliss.

I have been using 10.4.1 for about a month with no problems at all, Spotlight is fantastic! Thanks for the update info on 10.4.2 - the 25MB file is downloading as we speak.

Thanks for the info Atorie - I have been running a mac since 1986 so I know my way around and have never been scared - tell a lie, I once lost 80 pages of a catalogue and the backups were corrupt too! This was back in 1994 and was the first 248 page catalogue produced all digitally (including the use of a Kodak/Nikon digital 420 camera) - WYSWYG in Sydney produced the film (another first) from PLI disks - and the couriers tyres were burning up running files backwards and forwards.

I run PSCS and PSCS2 plus 7 just in case and I also run 4 external H/D’s for around half a terabyte.

I am looking forward to trying the system

Wow.. what a mission, i've been pretty lucky so far everything always have multipule backups.. well i started about 10 years after you... so I thank my lucky star that i grew up in the digital world which had already been though infancy... Yeah I still have CS, and 7 running and even still have my G3 running 4! - not sure why though... just for keepsake.

My externals have had no issues with the move to tiger i run two 500gig in tandem, everything on one is on the other (i might be a little bit over zelous in my data backup)

All I can say is ENJOY tiger!

Steve, Chris and Atorie, thanks for the info, funds are (as always) a little short up this way and my G4 has only 30GB HDD, so I think I will hold off on Tiger until next hardware purchase, hopefully a shiny new PB G5 !?!?
