Ebay problem..

Postby spada on Sun Jul 17, 2005 4:47 pm

Hi
Any time I bid on ebay, it doen't matter I won or not , I had some email from someone behaft fo ebay give me a second chance, or someone who claims the seller of Ebay item like this
I am the seller of theNIKON LENS ED XXXXXXX f1.4D With box &case AS NEW Item number: 75295871xx,and I've just been contacted by the eBay staff who informed me that the winner of the item I sold, and due to security reasons the eBay policy automatically proclaims you to be the winner by default. I need your agreement on this so I can contact eBay to confirm you that you're the winner, otherwise I'll relist the item. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but I need an answer asap. Your last given bid is taken into consideration. Please email me to this address
discount4less@aol.com
to have it sealed asap. Looking forward to hearing from you
Thank you,
smeetje
.

The item above I've already pick up and paid for it, so I rang the seller, he said it is not his email, and he does not know anything about the above email address.
Another one here, I am not the winnerbut I had the following email from ebay
You expressed interest in an item titled " Nikkor XXXXXXXX (As new) " (Item 75220185xx) by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the high bidder. In compliance with eBay policy, the seller of that item is making this Second Chance Offer to you at your bid price of AU $xxxx.00. The seller has issued this Second Chance Offer because either the winning bidder was unable to complete the transaction or has duplicate items for sale. If you accept this offer just contact the seller at
claraalberto@cs.com
. Do not use the Respond Now Button through eBay because the seller will not be able to respond in due time, just copy and send this text to
claraalberto@cs.com
for a faster response which will increase your chances to purchase this item.If this isn't the first second chance offer you've received contact directly the seller at:
claraalberto@cs.com
.

Thank you,
nickhaydn

The real seller of the above had a different email address.I've ask him several questions about the item .
The reason I use several Quote is to stop people from accidentaly click on that email.
What going on at ebay....

I get it all the time, I just ignore them or report them to ebay so they can deal with them if they can.
It gets a bit much sometimes, latley I'm getting emails asking me to update my account details and give a heap of other info. I was told by ebay to ignore and report because they never ask for your info by email.

Hi
The problem is not the seller they are very nice, they gave me phone number to ask a few days before bid end, those email from people outside ebay, but I do not know how do they know my email, and how they use ebay email forwarding system to send me their email, in both case I've rang both seller one at Atarmon, one at near Newtral Bay and they don't know why.
The first case I was the winner In the second case the winner is one of our forum member.

interesting stuff, so has this occured to you over time thru different auctions and different sellers?

usually hear of hacked ebay accounts with big ticket items for extremly low prices and the orignal ebay id person has no idea whats going on.

This is a new scam but one that is easy to see through, especially if you have already received the goods

I believe it's basically a third person (ie, not the ebayer who put his stuff for sale) who is preying on auctions whose closing price was quite good. They find your details in the bid history and send by email a fake Ebay-looking webpage promising a second chance to buy the item you didn't win (usually at your last bidding price). If you follow through, they'll probably ask you to send money by Western Union in some third country, so they can rip you off... Report them to Ebay.

Link is right. I'm familiar with the eBay system and all I can say is that all those emails are a bunch of hogwash.

In particular, these emails attempted to use ambiguous terms such as "..due to security reasons the eBay policy automatically proclaims you to be the winner by default", or "In compliance with eBay policy, the seller of that item is making this Second Chance Offer to you...", or to lure the addressee into thinking that they have to complete the trade.

If your bid is not the winning bid, you are under no legal obligation to complete the trade. If the seller has to cancel a higher bid than yours, and yours becomes the highest bid, *before* the auction is ended, than you are bound. Otherwise just ignore those emails.

Interestingly, I see some parralels between this and some of the threads I've seen on photography forums. Apparently those who bought CS2 from Adobe's websites have received emails from people trying to sell them CS2 at a much cheaper price. Go figure.

Are you sure it's legit?

Did you click on a link from witihn the email to go to the item in question, or did you go to it by going to eBay independantly, and then finding the item?

I was bidding on a H/D last year and lost in the last seconds. About an hour later I received an email from the seller offering me the H/D at my last bid price which was about $5 less than the winner.

I had purchased through Ebay from this person before so knew of his integrity - so I purchased and received said H/D.

Simply put, when the seller has sold to the highest bidder he also has email addresses for others bidding and can, therefore, make two or even three sales without having to pay an Ebay commission.

As has been reiterated by several others, Second Chance Offers from the original seller of the item you placed a bid on are fully legit. However emails claiming to be second chance offers from another seller or third parties (as in Spada's case) are the ones to be suspect. These are not instigated by the original seller - so one should NOT view them as dodgy or dishonourable. Any seller (or any user IIRC) can obtain the contact information of any person who bidded on any item in ebay, and proceed to post a message promising the world on a silver platter....

Ebay is a minefield these days, I'm surprised businesses can thrive and consumers can still pick up genuine bargains.

Just to let everybody know the case, and more becareful when receive some emails like this.If the seller had two or many same items, it is OK, but as Onyx said they are not the original seller ( the real sellers also gave me chance to inspect the item prior to biding). It only happen when you bid on something with big price ticket.I believe that Link and Andoru is right ( post above).Hope that everyone becareful when have cases like this.
