I already have a xdrive but am looking for something with a little more functionality, ie being able to look at pictures and zoom in on the fly

A lot of the photography I do neccasatates (spelling?) this - motorsport is one particular example. Nothing worse than coming home after a full days shooting to find shots out of focus :(

So far im looking at the Epson P-2000 and the Iriver PMP120. The only drawback of the Iriver is it doesnt display RAW files but I could get around that by shooting RAW+JPEG. The Iriver also plays divx/xvid as well... and is about $150-$200 cheaper than the Epson

Ahh decisions decisions :D

You're right Cordy and solid decision
The Xdrive won't do what you & me and other all want. I only want my photos stored and view in NEF format, with zoom in, larger LCD screen than the "match box" size, no movies, MP3 with me.
If I want to listen to the music or watching movies, I go home, sitback, relax with my home theatre.

I just bought the PM-120 and will do a full review on it soon..

Let me just say: Its a MP3/media player first and a storage solution second...
Being a USB1.1 host means that it is pretty slow at copying

The image viewing properties are excellent, good zooming and panning ability...

And Videos on it are very cool...

Ok I have the Xdrive VP6210 it reads NEFs and i can veiw and enlarge all the images to see what they look like.

Some specs

The MMV features the following
Copy from any memory card including Compactflash, MicroDrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo (via adapter), MMC, RS-MMC (via adapter), Secure Digital, mini SD (via adapter), Smartmedia, xD picture card to the internal Hard disk
Copy selected files from the Hard disk (or a memory card) to a memory card inserted
View JPEG photos up to 16 MegaPixels, run slideshow, view Exif information, Rotate by 90 degrees, Zoom in/out
Play MPEG-1 or Motion JPEG in AVI or MOD format videos
Play MP3 and WMA music
Audio/Video outputs to plug to a TV and/or listen on headphones
Infrared remote control is supplied
3 hours of battery life with the LCD Screen on (up to 6 hours when the LCD is in standby)
USB 2.0 (USB 1.1 backward compatible) connection to a computer
Faster transfer speed than current XS Drive models (VP2060, VP300, VP3310, VP3610)

I think if you can live with this as so far i am happy with mine and at least 1/2 the price of the Epson but that depends on how much money you want to spend.

My opinion is that it fills my needs at this stage to back up cards as well as preveiw pictures, slideshow etc.. watch movies, listen to MP3's.
Last nite i actually left it running playing a movie so i could flatten the battery so i can recharge it for the weekend.

So do your numbers and i think will should have a range of different storage devices within our membership here to maybe suit everyones needs. So let us know cordy if you get the 1 u mentioned other than the epson and see what it is like.
Cheers
John

Thank you Cordy, you've just validated what I was trying to say earlier in the thread!

Basically, the P2000 (at this point in time) will only display a NEF fullscreen and doesnt allow you to zoom into the NEF. Therefore, it comes back to my original question. Is the screen on the P2000 good/big enough to judge focus on a NEF or is shooting RAW+JPEG going to be required for judging focus/DOF???

The P2000 is 3.8-inch high-definition TFT colour screen.
Does other has the same size screen of it? or what's the size of the screen on other?
IMHO, it's the best screen solution I have ever seen before.

John,

Are you able to enlarge the images enough to see if they are in focus?

So wish I had had something like the Epson over the weekend.

Was down south at Taupo for a sled-dog race this weekend where we were running the dogs both mornings. The other half was taking pics as I was running our dog and so I didnt really have time to help her out. It was very early morning so stuck the camera in Sports and bumped the ISO up to 800 and left her to it. She filled most of my cards on the first morning and so could only take a few more pics on the second morning.

We got back last night and reviewed the pics. Unfortunately, she was quite disappointed with the vast majority of them. She did get a few really nice shots, but a lot of them she hadnt filled the frame sufficiently or had taken from bad positions (grass etc in f/g had caused focus issues). They had mostly looked ok from the LCD on the camera, apart from some of the more obvious 'dots in the distance' type shots.

Having something like the Epson would have meant that we could have downloaded and reviewed them during Sat afternoon and then given her some pointers for the Sunday morning, as well as giving her fresh cards to work from. That would have helped with the compositional stuff, but I still dont know if it would have helped with stuff that was slightly OOF as my camera lives in NEF-only.

Yup, everything I have read has said that the Epson has the best screen by far. But even if it is the best by far, do you get a 'good enough' view of the pic to be able to use it as a review tool out in the field when shooting NEFs only?? Or for that application, would one be best to shoot NEF+JPEG??

What can I say now? I have it and i love it, I only shoot real NEF, and with the D2x 12mp, no Jpeg for me in life!
So the final decision is your judgement.

Hey Birdie,

Thanks for the comments.

I know that Ive sounded a bit like a broken record on this. The problem is that being in NZ, its often VERY hard to actually get your hands on things like this to have a good play with it. So purchase decisions often come down to talking with other people overseas, who have one.

Cheers
Rob.

Rob, Birddy's P2000 has the best screen I have seen on a psd. Not as good as a 12" notebook, but easily the best PSD screen I have seen. Couldn't do PP on it, but gives you the best idea yet if the shot is ok

Airfares are on sale atm! to fly to Sydney, Australia is not a major issue for the lust. I had someone from NZealander came here last week, picked up a D2x and few lenses + 2 x SB800.
He said: the saving of buying from Australia is more than enough for him and his wife stay in Sydney for a week + returned airfare.

Hmmm. Thats damned tempting, I can tell you that!! :)
Now, if you can just figure out some way of getting yourself set up as a duty-free outlet (ie no GST), that would make it even more attractive!! :)
I can just imagine it.

Me: Hi honey, Im home. Oh and by the way, we're off to Oz for the weekend.
SO: Oh, thats great!! What a nice little holiday
Me: The only thing is that Im also gonna buy a new camera while we are over there...
Me: *cringes* and waits for significant other to hit the roof!

robboh,
No duty free outlet in Australia can give you fair price of photography equipments, and NO DUTY PAID to Photography gears in Australia, the only thing is: will have GST (10%) charges on your purchases and you'll get the portion of paid GST at the TRS counter as soon as you leave Australia, provided your purchases is within 30 days prior to your departure.
