A lightbulbs inner torment

Does this shot work?
It's supposed to be/represent a lightbulb fighting against its pre-determined path. :!:

No, it was meant to be a lightbulb casting shawdow rather than light. Would appreciate critique and comment.

Matt

There's something missing for me and I have a suggestion to fix it. Why not light this from two directions thus casting two shadows to emphasise the shadow conflict.

Hmm, not a bad idea Peter.
I also think the choice of lightbulb might not be the best one. It isn't instantly recognisable as a bulb.

Matt, I like the concept but like Stubbsy it is not quite me. How about turning it on and then have Mic help you invert it? Serious, just turning the lit section black as a bulb lights omnidirectionally, not directionally like a shadow. I think that is why the theme isn't clear.

Matt

Strangely whern I first saw the pic and before reading your text I thought "Gee a screw in lightbulb. Don't see many of these in Australia." Didn't even notice the shadow

How about taking a photo like it is now, or with two shadows etc. and then take another one with the light on, and then blend the light bulb into the original photo. That'd be interesting, a lit bulb with shadows!! It'd involve a bit of photoshopping so it might not be the concept you were after.

Thought it was done in 3D for a moment :D

I'd like to see more of the shadow on the right rather than having it cropped off. Great idea and concept tho, very artistic

Hi Matt

excellent concept

but i think the use of the modern lightbulb somehow dulls the idea. The first time i saw it i had to think a little, I could have interpreted it in many ways like energy saving, energy balancing etc

if you used a more recognisable lightbulb like the clear ones with the coathanger looking things inside, the concept would work.

I first thought it was one of those under-arm applicators! But I kinda like the image. It's oddly off-center and doesn't scream at me. It has a quite dignity. Like Stubbsy...I think that object has a lot more images in it. Ansel Adams once photographed a white cup and saucer over 1000 times in order to get the magic shot. There's your challange!

Thanks for all the critique guys. I agree that the concept is probably stronger than the image.

I'm going to give it another go later on. As for 1000 shots to get the magic shot - we'll if needs must. Can you imagine what Adams' output would have been like if he had access to a D70 and computer?

Cheers guys

I doubt it. If he was a public servant he'd have been so busy with his day job he wouldn't have had the free time to take all the great images he managed to leave for us.

Another idea could be to find an old kerosene lamp and put that side by side with a lightbulb. Then either light the lightbulb and set the shadow on the kero lamp or vice versa :)

* Out with the old, in with the new

OR

* Things were built to last in the past
