You're right. I'm not helping things by starting this thread.
anyway, I part with this news clipping from Bloomberg on Nikon's outlook in general: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... QMqgn7BWHs
This is an old discussion, posted here before not long ago. The rumor of D200 is about 2 YO, but the truth is not revealed yet. Worth for a wait! and looking someone's photos. If it's announced by Sept. or Oct 05, you'll may be see it in Feb. or Mar. 06. Birddog114

There'll prob be a D3h or x by 2008.

This is another event I'm not sure I'd be holding my breath and waiting for. IIRC, Photokina was last held in 2004, and it's only held every other year. Therefore, no event this year. g.

Hmm... me thinks not.
If the D2X doesn't have the cable release hole on the shutter, I highly doubt the D200 will. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Re: D200?
Red X for me too. Do you mean this: Looks like a digital F4! If that's the actual prototype I am soooo sold! Love bodies with integrated vertical release button.
Canon's EOS 5, the 20D to 1D2 gap-plugger known by any other name, has been rumoured to appear by Aug/Sept this year.
Personally I see the Fuji S3 Pro as the D100 replacement. Nikon mount, D-TTL flash, integrated grip, 12.3MP*, etc. * not actually 12.3
No. It's not actually 12 mp.
In fact, the S2 has more in common with 12mp than the S3. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Struggling to understand this. The extra 6 mp are for extending the dynamic range on the upper end, not the resolution? Sounds intriguing.
I hate the flash sync, 1/180? Sounds wimpy.
Basically, it pulls in 12mp and resamples it back down to 6mp so you have what is, in essence, a better quality 6mp image.

Good find! we have been talking about this one and scheduled for late in third quarter of 05. As mentioned in other thread, we won't see it in Jan/ Feb next year. Birddog114

Interesting Bloomberg article --- what I don't understand is how can Canon claim 60% of the Digital SLR market when it is expecting to shipp and sell 1.8 Million Units and Nikon 1.6 Million?
Nikon D300, Nikkors 70-200 VR, 17-55, 50 1.4,18-200 VR etc
Two points here ...
What a manufacturer "claims" is one thing; the rality may be very different, but a claim is simply marketingspeak and should be treated with an appropriate absence of respect and credibility. Any manufacturer mey ship any quanity of product, but to whom are they shipping that product, and does it all get sold? Certainly, product shipped doesn't mean product sold. When Nikon recently introduced the D2Hs, they pulled all of the existing D2H stock back from the distribution channels and upgraded an rebadged the cameras. Was that then double-counted as having been shipped? My guess is probably .... g.

Hi
It is expected to be around 10 MP CMOS CCD, because Nikon use Sony CCD and Sony now has 10 MP CMOS CCD( low power comsumption),next year if D200 out then in my opinion the price of D2X would be a bit lower than now, if it use same Electronics and AF sys as D2X then it would be a very good camera. Regards spada
I doubt it will be with 10MP. Look at the D100 on ECS website, it's still around $2400.00 after 4 years on the market and the D70/70s are reigning those sectors atm. Don't expect heap of reducing price from the flagship model, it'll be discontinued or will be none in the market, and it won't happen with Nikon in the next 24 months, until the D3 series or other replacement models out. But perhaps the D2Xs same as the game of D2Hs All manufacturers, they spent lot of their resources in R&D, and they have to get them back with profits. Birddog114

HI
Hi It is unlikely, IMO, that the electronics and AF would be the level of D2 series. A D200 would be position to compete directly against Canon 20D. (D100 vs 10D). I would expect a D200 to have more AF sensors but only a cross centre sensor. Pixel count isn't the main contributor to image quality - so it may well be still 6 MB or at best 8MB. regards, Arthur
Wow! I'm excited! Not interested in increased megapixels. But would like a heavier more solid feel, vertical shot option, more AF points and the funky new matrix 2 system. What I dont want to see is the white balance issue flare up.
Re: HI
yeosca, Defintely no 8mp! 4mp on my and your D2h do the perfect job so far Birddog114

Re: HI
Good to see that people still remember that pixel count isn't the be-all-and-end-all to image quality. Unless we have some Harvey Norman (Hardly Normal) Salesmen frequenting this site, I'd like to think we are all smart enough to know more MP doesn't equal better photos This reminds me, I was watching TV yesterday and saw an infomercial on a new camera-phone that had an AMAZING 1.3MP camera, which would give you "fantastic looking photos", right from your phone. What they neglected to tell you was that if you view the pics on anything other than the LCD screen of the phone, you'd be sorely disappointed. I had to laugh....even though there was probably someone out there that was watching and now lusts after this phone. It will be interesting to see what Nikon bring out with the D200, although I won't be trading in my D70 for quite some time yet. It's not holding me back any, so I see no reason why I should change..... Dave

This one is going to be a bit of a hard one for Nikon.
They need to keep it priced similar to the D100, give a reasonable improvement over the D100, and be better than the D70 (hard task) as well as at least competitive with the 20D or its replacement. All that and keeping full-enough-featured that noone cries 'Nikon behind the 8ball with a new camera and playing catchup again' but still giving it a market segment that doesnt overlap with D2x too much. My guess is that they will drop the D2Hs and despec the body slightly from the D2Hs in terms of weather protection etc. Basically aligning it like the F100 was against the F5. Sorta a pro body for people like wedding photogs who dont need the all-out weather protection that D2x offers. I guess they figure that journos will typically go with the D2x over the D2Hs nowdays anyway? I reckon it will be along the lines of:

robboh,
Not 6.8mp, nor 8mp. Nikon will retain the D2Hs for a difference market. Other specs will be more improvement based on the D70 and body as same the D100. Price will be in higher band of AU$3K RRP Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
Based on past Nikon choices, the D200 will probably be a minimum of a 12mp and could very well hit around 15-16 mp just to stay in the game for what other companies are planning.
They will not use a 6.8mp (the 6mp chip by Fuji for the S3 was bad move) nor will they hit 8mp, as that's already been done for too long. It has to be something with a bit of life in it. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

doing a bit of reading it seems the big question will be the AA filter they will use...
My hope is a very weak one so we get the sharpness (and learn how to avoid/fix moire) New page

I've heard that Canon will be releasing a 12mp FULL-FRAME camera as 20D's replacement at the end of this year. Reasonably priced too.
Ah the temptation of the dark side....
I doubt they'd replace the 20D with a Full frame sensor that early.
Especially with a full frame sensor. That technology hasn't reached the $3000 AU market yet. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

I don't think, it's the case! 12mp/ full frame, it's in the dream of the Canoner Birddog114

How on earth did I miss that!!! Gotta admit that I really liked the look of the 'prototype' on the 2nd page. Thats one really nice looking piece of kit. Pity its not real A few other things have sprung to mind since like: * improved auto WB; that actually handles incadescent properly (normal incadescent temp is outside the range of the D70 AWB) * individual channel histograms * seperate AF-On button * An iTTL pre-flash that DOESNT make my dog blink EVERY time (FEV-Lock works fine, but pain in the butt to go into the menus and change to that mode). * An AF-Assist light more like the Coolpix5200 (orange, doesnt blind people and works every time) * A default tone-curve that provides a picture with a bit more pop and less PP required. * A way to select iTTL v's iTTL-B rather than having to change the metering method or setting to manual (my F601 lets me do this and I far prefer it), or at least let you use CW metering for iTTL. * Choice to select the JPEG quality/size when doing RAW+JPEG. * Not having to hold down a button to while rotating a dial to zoom in/out of a picture. (this really confuses my partner; why cant they just say that the cmd dial zooms once enter is pressed and only have to hit the button to move the little yellow window around or something). Hmmmm. What else am I missing. Actually, why not just gimme a D2x cheap and I'll be reasonably happy By the way, I actually do really like the D70, its just there are lots of little things that I reckon could be done to improve it. Smile; it makes people wonder what you have been up to.
a bit difficult using this feature when setting up for panorama and bracketing. does the timer work continuously for bracket shots? i maybe be wrong but doesnt timer only work for one frame then it resets to previous shooting mode?
Robboh
Yes, exactly it's the true solution! Birddog114
VNAF, My Beloved Country and Airspace
Good point, I don't know the answer to that. I'll try it out on my SLR when I get home.
i stand corrected, in part, if the remote and timer mode is selected, it will remain in this mode after shutter release. but if only self timer is used, it is only active once
They can knock off the damn switching back to single trigger after I've selected Remote and timer. That is the most annoying thing. Like the camera is assuming that I'm only ever going to use it once.
