Just to prevent the potential spread of misinformation, on the Crumpler Formal Lounge, as with the Farmer's Double, the lower compartment's opening for camera gear is independent of the top compartment, and filling the top half of the bag with other gear in no way inhibits the opening or use of the bottom half, due to the innovative thinking on the part of Crumpler designers, the lower compartment hinges like a jaw.

At the risk of hostility, I vote not to comment on issues one is not familiar with.

I bought the Farmers Double for the same reasons that Onyx did - namely the laptop, camera, and travelling clothes onboard a flight. It worked a treat, and is still a fantastic bag.
I use it all the time now, it has my camera, kit lens, 70-300 sigma, and a 50mm in there no problems at all. There is space for at leat another 2 lenses or another lens and an sb800.
The top compartment isnt overly big, but it's large enough for a bottle of water, some food etc. I fold a jumper or shirts or whatever and put them in the laptop area - it keeps them nice and pristine.

I will outgrow this bag, but for the meantime it's excellent.

I don't have the bag but had at least 5 customers switched to the other type of bag packs from Crumpler Formal Lounge.

I asked why? and their answers were:
- Great bag for people don't have lot of toys or just for day pack
- Good for a camera body and coupa small lenses.
- Camera compartment is too small for they need.
- Hard to get the camera out of the bag once you filled up other compartments with heavy gears as water bottle, clothing, laptop etc.....
- Once you have the 80-400VR or 70-200VR and a D2H/ X with an SB800 + other lenses, then forget that bag cos it won't fit all.
- Crumpler Formal Lounge is just designed for light photography task.
- They wanted something proper and suit their style of photography.

You can have one camera but will have few bags laying around after a year in photography

On the money there Birdy.

Already looking to get my 2nd bag, 7 months in. My current bag is fine for my photography needs, but it sucks for my travelling needs. If I travel I want ONE bag that includes a daypack, something the Rover AW II seems to be able to do ;)

Probably the main reason why I'm keeping away from a minimeet (Other then there's been none I've been able to make....which will change as of the next 1 or 2).

I'm happy without a VR lens and a SB800, soon as I use them, I know I will lust. And it WILL be YOUR fault Birdy :p

I just purchased a Rover Plus AW from Camera Exchange in Melbourne. The cost was $225. I purchased it with the intension of taking it o/s with me in a couple of months.

So far I've taken in out on as many occasions as I can, making sure that I load the top compartment with as much as possible to see how it would go.

At this stage I'm very happy with it. I didn't find it too difficult to get the camera out with a full top compartment. More importantly, I am very happy with the harness itself, especially the ability to adjust the length of the harness itself to suit peoples' height.

I have taken it out on hikes in the Dandenongs and even walked around Vic Markets last Saturday to see how it would go in crowded environments. No dramas at all.

My only worry now is whether I will be able to take it on the plane as carry-on luggage.

Cheers,
Ray

baboo, I got a story from a mate yesterday who's taken it from AU>HK>SG>AU with no qualms at all as carry on....

This mate hasn't used it on hikes or any real long walks, great to read a good review of it. (I know the Plus is 4cm's bigger then the II. 4cm isn't really much tho. My mate's got the II, which is what I'm trying to get...if a certain birdy replies ;) )

Cheers,

Rest of the world: most airport have "size check racks" at checkin and at boarding if it looks reasonable yuo are in... :P

US - if it looks big they check, too big and it goes via checked luggage!

Only really important to trip to US. (correct me if I am wrong)
Important this includes Hawaii, also if you are transiting in a US airport and getting off and on the plane!!!!
