hi mhd
i'm looking into buying some lighting within 3 months so will keep watch on this thread cheers rob
I would be wary - the replacement strobes may be a problem if they are specific to this unit and not available locally.

Re: Chinese Department Store (ebay)
Can't say I have brought something like that but have, been burnt with my wife getting something else from a seller in china, near perfect feedback, it was only after we sent the money, negative feedbacks were written cause payment was sent, but goods never recieved, I told her to stay away from sellers in China. MHD, the brand name is interesting "small overlord". A company in Sydney & Melbourne, http://www.dragonimage.com.au is always advertising cheap setups, but I barely know how to turn a light switch on and so can't comment on quality.
This might be of interest MHD
http://www.dragonimage.com.au/specials/ ... %20kit.htm price is right at $299
not bad... Will need to purchase a snoot (I think that is the right name... light a lightbox on the front)

The switch will be either in the up or down position, depending upon how the electrician wired it in. To turn the lights on place the switch into the reverse position. You may need a torch if the room is in darkness. Or vice versa. Regards

Matt,
When they wired up Glen's place, they included dimmer switches on all of the lights. So not only does he have trouble negotiating your (quite lucid and accurate) instructions, in his place it's of little consequence because there are no traditional switches for him to practise on! Perhaps that helps one to understand why he's so often confudes. g.

studio lightingHi guys, I got a studio set-up from the chinese department store and have mixed feelings.
The tri-pods and soft box and umbrellas are just great on their own...as for the flash slave and trigger, well, I got a small shock when i attached the flash trigger to my hotshoe which in turn is connected to the flash in the soft box....dissconnected that very quickley. After seeing that no damage had beenn done, I emailed them and to my surprse, emailed me back...problem is that their answer was that china has been underwater for 10 weeks and it most likely "just got wet" Solution...put in sun or use hairdryer and try again....NO THANKS...I'll get an electrician to check it out...well I hope that helps. All in all it's a good deal even if you have to replace the trigger...all up to Aussie cost $160 and a 6 week wait. Ron ATTENTION..they have just emailed me and told me that a replacement was on the way..I shall keep you posted.. HELLO all....just an update on "chinese department store. As I said above, I had a slight problem with the flash trigger in the studio set..Well, they have been excellant in sending me another one straight away. This one is fine....thanks guys. You know, you could make a few enquiries about studio lighting at the usual places.. if there's enough demand, I'm sure HKSupplies could accomodate your orders (no guarantees however). The ebay seller ChineseDeptStore with a feedback rating of 94% probably should be avoided.
I just cracked up laughing when I saw Glen's with a link to Dragon Image. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but... well, I would rather D70users not do business with that company, but that's due to personal reasons which I think is best kept to myself in this case.

When I was there (at Glen's place) he just clapped his hands and the lights came on...don't know what he's going on about 'switches' Geoff

I agreed with Onyx and had hard feeling experiences with them(Dragonimage).
Better not and better stay away from the shark. I've been down with them talked and talked and finally got the trash in my hand. Birddog114

I bought a light set from this ebay seller. It works fine and was cheap so I don't expect too much from it. I'll probably upgrade the lights at some stage but the stands and umbrella's are OK. For the amount that I expect to use the kit it's fine for me.
