Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.
Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

OK, OK, OK....so I've been gone a bit. Heres where I've been.

Actually, I had some questions about this pic. Since I bviously couldn't take the pics, I set up my d70 / 70-200vr for a friend to shoot with. Unfortunately the lighting was horrible in this rink and I had to go up to iso 800 to get the shutter speed I needed. However, all the pics came out grainy. Would A) SB800 have helped out here? B) lower the iso and use an auto mode (since I couldn't change settings?) C) maybe go with wider aperture and hope for DoF to come out (there were a few out of focus - prob operator error though) Any thought?? Thanks

That makes two of us who left for a while.
Flash won't help you. I'd open up the apeture all the way first, then start going to the ISO. If the grain is a problem, get a noise reduction program and apply it sparingly. The grain is coming from the poor exposure.

Good to see you back, I was wondering what had happened. An Sb800 might have helped but I think that the maximum effective range is about 22 mtrs.

There is one thing I have learnt about upping the Iso on the d70: You have to be exacting to the point of over exposure with your images... underexposed images at high ISO are noisy to the point of uselessness...
So shooting high ISO is risky because you cant underexpose for safety and bring it out in PP... However a correctly exposed high ISO shot can have suprisingly little noise...

Kerry has shown a few times in his threads that you can get excellent results with high iso but the exposure has to be precise  Chris

thanks for the tips...I probably should have had him shoot in raw so I could fix a little more later. Duh. Actually, that game was in San Diego, should have planned it better and stopped by SoCal! Oh well, my brain is on Vaation pending further notice.
