Full Moon (unofficial mini challenge)

Postby Rusty W. Griswald on Wed Jul 20, 2005 11:57 pm

Saw the other thread with Aussie Dave's moon photos and then I did a bit of a google for the next full moon.

Turns out according to this site http://www.asnsw.com/almanac/index.html
it's at 9:03pm Sydney time tomorrow Thursday.

My suggestion is we all go out tomorrow night and:
1. Take a full moon related photo
2. Howl at it
3. Come inside, process it and then post it in this thread!

As simple as that. Weather should be mainly fine (except for Brisbane according to http://www.weatherzone.com.au/ )

Shall give it a go....clouds permitting, of course !

It will be interesting to see what shots different lenses pick up, and the settings people use..... :)

A gallery sounds good MHD.

I found a much better moonrise calculator:
http://www.ga.gov.au/bin/astro/moonrisenset

So would the 9.03pm on the other site be the precise moment the moon is full, as opposed to the actual time it rises? Any amateur stargazers know the answer?

Actually I think Full Moon is at 9:01 EST tonight. Rise time depends on your location and your local horizon

My effort with wrong WB. Tungsten actually made the contrast better. Lens is the 70-300 Sigma @1/800sec F5.6

I'm outter this one....I've just about exhausted all my attempts!
Would be nice to see what settings others use in comparison though.
I did notice that early in the morning the moon looks abit dimmer and easier to pick out details then at night.
Anyone else notcice this?
Keep posting!
Andy, thats a great shot hand-held! Very detailed.
Cheers, Jase. :D

Nice shot radar, but it looks like the moon is having a gravitational effect on the earth and pulling the horizon closer to it... either that or the photo was taken at a slight angle..

Nice shots everyone... I couldnt even see the moon thru the clouds tonight. :(

Well, I tried last night (with both the 50mm and the 70-200 VR) and got a couple that were "okay" but it is painfully clear that I need to:
a) improve my tripod technique (still a newbie to tripod use - this was almost the first time I'd used it); and
b) learn post-processing big time. ("Sharpening"??? No really - don't laugh.....) :D

All the gear and no idea.
