Kite

This young Kite keeps bringing his catch onto my neighbours balcony to eat. They are away at the moment and I imagine all the fish scraps will stink by the time they get back!

I'm about 99% sure this isn't a Kite but an Osprey.

It is an Osprey and it isn't young either. It has yellow eyes, younger ones have a different color. I think orange iirc.

Kipper I'll have to grab my ID book out of the car, but I am fairly sure (now not so) that it was a juvenile whistler. There is a couple of them who each lay claim to a channel marker outside of my place. I will post the result of my ID search tommorow.

Of course we both already have a feeling that you may be right.

Most definately not a juvenile Whistling Kite

A Whistling Kite, looks practically identical to what it does as an adult except for a few coloring variations in the underside of the wing.

It'd also make sense that it's an Osprey, seeing as it's eating stacks of fish and dumping it on the neighbours patio.

Kipper it would also explain why they are hanging around as a pair.

Oneput you're very lucky to have them that close and so accessible to them. I haven't seen one yet. I'm guessing it's the next thing I'll have to go after along with Sea Eagles after I get some shots of a Wedge-Tail Eagle and a Little Eagle

Cool shot. I bet it's the same pair my dad and I saw around at Caloundra. Mind you we were there when i was visiting at Easter. Apparently there are a pair of Ospreys nesting at Golden beach at the moment. Tell them to stick around until Christmas.

Kiper I used the 70-200mm as the bird was about twenty metres away. I didn't even think about the SB800 (which I do have), as I just wanted to get the shot. By the way we have a lot of Sea Eagles around the Pumicestone Passage area and more up around the Noosa River.

Nicole it is not the same pair as at Golden Beach (where I lived up until a few weeks ago), that pair still nest in the pole errected for them when Pelican Waters was developed, so hopefully they will still be around when you come up. PM me before you do and I will give you my mobile number and maybe we can get to meet.

Try it next time. If you don't have a better beamer you could always try adjusting the ISO which might help you get a little more reach out of the flash. Do they come by often? Get prepared and take some shots

Kipper since I moved into my new home they have been here every day, and you are right I should have bumped up the ISO as it was late on a very cloudy day. Again my only excuse is that I was in a hurry to get the shot.

I want some natural perched shots and some flight shots of the Osprey.

Kipper I'll do my best. The natural perch is the top of a channel marker about fifty mertres away. Might have to use the 80-400 for that.
