Damn FirmwareI'm just trying to download the firmware on mac. For some reason I can't seem to get it to work.
I download the firmware, I drag it onto the D70 folder in the bar, I unhook the d70, go to firmware in the settings and it still says A1.01 and B1.02. Can anyone tell me why this is? Have I mentioned here that I can't stand computers. Everyone and their dog does this stuff with such ease except for me for some reason.
I thought you had to upgrade the D70 firmware by putting it onto CF cards and going through it like that.

you do. You're suppose to format the cf card, and then plug it into the computer via usb. Just doesn't want to take though.
Dave,
The procedure is something like this ... 1. Format the card in the camera. 2. Turn the camera off. 3. Use a card reader. 4. Move the card to the reader. 5. Copy the first of the two files onto the card. 6. Move the card to the camera. 7. Turn the camera on. You should see a message asking if you want to perform the upgrade. Answer the question. 8. Goto 2 and repeat for the second file. g.

I don't have a card reader, but in the instructions it says that you can do it in the camera, as the camera is basically a reader as well. I think I'm not copying the file properly to the card, but I can't be sure, as it seems to copy over okay, but when I unhook the USB connection, it isn't giving me a prompt or anything.
Anyone with a Mac out there? This is driving me nuts.
dooda,
I have just gone onto Nikon Asia and sourced the procedure for Mac You should be able to do the same from Nikon USA. Hope this helps you. fozzie
When people ask what equipment I use - I tell them my eyes.

Thanks fozzie, I didn't find it very helpful. It just says copy the file to the top tier of the card, whatever that means. I think I did it, but it just isn't working. Ah well, thanks for the help everyone. I'm pissed this always seems to happen to me.
"The firmware can be copied to the camera memory card either by connecting the computer directly to the D70 using the USB cable, or by removing the memory card from the camera and inserting it in a CompactFlash card reader." So apparently I don't actually need a reader, according to the text. I really think my problem is something else. Last edited by dooda on Tue Jul 19, 2005 5:20 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Dave,
I've got a pair of old (=small) cards here, with the firmware loaded and ready to roll. If you care to hop on the next flight to SYD, I can meet you at the airport and we can do this in about 5 minutes. That'd give you a couple of hours for sightseeing before hopping back on the plane for the return flight. g.

Gary, don't tempt me, I dislike my job enough as it is. It wouldn't take much, of course I'd probably end up asking for a few nights stay.
Few nights being defined as a couple months.

It's updating now. I dug out the card adapter and used my bro's epson. Seems to be working now. I wonder why it wouldn't work via USB?
I really wanted to come to that Gary. I even had some of the more important details ironed out, like baggage, clothes, australian accent etc. I had a few minor limitations though, No time off work No money Wife made other plans for me. Other than those three minor details, I was all ready to go. Thanks. Now go and comment on my pic below bastards, it's sitting there lonely while you comment on the leaky pipes.
I think that the file was going into the dcim folder within the flash card for some reason. This time I made sure it stayed at the first window, which is probably what the instructions meant when they said top tier etc. I tend to freak out when computer lingo gets concerned. Both are updated now.
Thanks Again.
Dave,
Minor details indeed. Especioally that lattermost of those.
Pictures? What do you think this is? A photography forum or something? g.

Here are the solutions for you, dooda: - Taking vacation. - Don't buy or renovation house/ flat, if already commited, see the bank manger. - Made plan for wife and tell her: it's an order. Birddog114

Oh puhhhhleeeease! If you really want to handle this a way that a woman would like it, put into terms including "romantic overseas holiday that you've always deserved" or something similar - anything but "it's an order"!!! Even if you don't get the trip, I'll almost guarantee it'll earn you brownie points anyway! Good luck!
If I said "it's an order" she'd smile, lock me up in a cage and not give me any bananas for week.
I'd have to languish in my own feces. Not pleasant, but we make it work.
Ahh - so that really is you in the avatar Dave Peter

I let her lock me up in a cage, and she deals with me being an ape. It's sort of a give give relationship. Like I said before, we seem to make it work.
Hey Dooda you are not the only one whom computers seem not to like. I still struggle on occassions even though I spend most of my day in front of one

You would need the camera in Mass Storage mode, not PTP.
D70s, 18-70, SB800, Nikkormat FTn, CP4500, Sigma 70-300 APO DG, Sigma 135-400 APO, Lensbabies 2.0, Brian's Hot Tub, Lack of talent, etc.

I had to download one of the firmwares twice, it was corrupted the first time and wouldn't unstuff properly. I don't have the manual here with me, so can't tell you which mode the camera has to be in, it's the mode where it mounts on your desktop (Mac) like an external hard drive (PTP I think). You then copy the firmware one by one to the empty, formatted CF card and disconnect and let the camera do the upgrade as per instructions. Don't forget to reformat the CF card in between firmwares Hope that helps Regards Horst
I have a D70s, so the menu may be different, particularly in your current older firmware.
From my D70s manual (p. 165) -
There would be more specific instructions in the firmware update package telling you any specific modes the camera should be in. i would tend to use Mass Storage as the camera just works as a normal card reader. Just make sure the file goes into the first window, and not any of the built in folders. That's the problem that I made. Once I had that figured it was no problem
