I think as part of the announcement of winners, you should also present a full statistical analysis of the voting trends ;)

I have started voting and have been able to sort what I feel doesn't fit. As for the rest, once again.... "Where do I start". :D

I found it helps when voting to do a full view and pay attention to the label of each shot. The labels tend to steer you towards what the photographer was thinking at the time..

..maybe not full-view for all, I think there are a few 3008x2000 shots in there, and that never looks good squished in an IE or Firefox window..

I have actually printed out each page of images so that I can lay them all out in front of me on the table. I can then see them all at once.

Hey Scott,

Am I right in thinking that 1 or 2 photos from the first round have disappeared or been withdrawn??? I can definitely remember one that isn't there any more - and maybe there was another???

Should we add an extra image to the comp? One of the voting process?

Surely another decisive moment. :)

My personal view is that the captions shouldn't be taken into account and that the image should pretty well speak for itself. There were a few in the last challenge that, without a very pointed caption, could never have been deciphered as meaning "3".

There was talk earlier on about not permitting captions or just having every entry titled "The Decisive Moment". This prevents the viewer from being led down a path of interpretation and allows them to make up their own mind. I think it's part of the challenge to get an image that 'says it all'. The winning images should need no explanation.

Simon, I believe that without words there would exist in society millions of photos that would be meaningless.

I believe that the biggest misnomer are the words ”Every picture tells a story”. Can you imagine every magazine and newspaper in the world publishing pics without a caption to define the pic - an example might be a volcano - great pic but where in the name of hell is it happening? Can you imagine the nightly news without words - hey, this happened today we have the pics but we really can’t tell you where, why or what for.

How often in this forum have we read the words - where was the pic taken, what is the pic of - we need words as much as we need vision IMO :D

Simon and Chris, in appreciation of your discussion I will post this which is from Sheetshooter and Bob Hughes discussion (sorry about lifting it). The photographer is making a social commentary with photography but also uses captions. Brought to mind your discussion.

This is a great thread :)

Now: Vote! Vote! Vote!

Think of it this way: You HAVE to vote for the PM.... But he does not have the chance to win a d70s :D

Imagine how annoyed you would be if a photo you did not like won and your vote could have changed the outcome!

Does that mean that the top 5 and images that weren't in the top 5 before, or that there are 5 or so images that have pulled ahead of the rest and they're swapping places?

Comp organisers Indulgence... I vote and know the positions of the entrants... and even though I have never had to in the past I would adjust my votes to break a tie in any of the position holders...

from the ~20+ entries it's a great response.... just thought that considering there are 1040+ members that there would be more entries?

do you think it's just that people doubt their skills?

I was expecting at least or over 60 entries for 2nd round + the entries of first round, made up total of 100, I say 10% of the registered member.

Its easy enough to enter and people are encouraged at every turn so I am happy with the number..

from the ~20+ entries it's a great response.... just thought that considering there are 1040+ members that there would be more entries?

do you think it's just that people doubt their skills?

MArk,

I certainly think that's a part of it, but also, there's a reason why it's called a "challenge". :)

I know you understand that, but I think that some here perhaps think a little too lightly of this aspect.

Then there's the ratio of active members to members. I think we're probably running at about 15 - 20%, which I am quite satisfied with. Typically, one would expect somewhere around 10%, I imagine.
